I was reading a post in the general forum and someone made a gun room with a vault door.  I have an old room in my basement (old coal room) that is perfect for this type of project.  The problem is the room of the room is under my front porch and if someone wanted to, they could cut through to get to my equipment.  It is water tight however how would I reinforce/armor the ceiling?  Any ideas?

i would look at a Poured Concrete Wall.  preferably reinforced with rebar.

How big is your room?  If you are handy and have a good source, steel plate in the 1/4 thick or smaller range would work.  Right now a 4x8 1/4 inch steel plate is running $169 out the door at One Stop Steel in St Louis.  I have seen posts where guys are using expanded steel or 1/8 plates sandwiched between plywood.  Yes I know plate steel gets heavy but it would take a lot of work to get through.  I have a vault door that I bought off craigs list not to long ago and will be starting on a room soon.

Good Luck

I just had a gun room built and had the same dilema. 6" poured walls and a vault door. My had to order special corrugated steel for my ceiling and then reinforced concrete. Don't know how to post pics so drop me an email and I'll send them to you if interested.

well if you install it yourself who is gonna know the room is even there? a obvious corner vault in the basement is one thing, but an extra space outside the foundation?

its not that obvious to people i wouldnt think

Thanks for the ideas and tips.  I will have to get the room cleaned out and make a better assessment to see if I can drop the ceiling a little so I can put up supports and do the rebar and cement or if I can just to the metal.  The porch above it is wood.  It isn't that obvious that there is a room there but I guess I just don't feel right armoring everything else and just having wood above it.

How about reinforcing the ceiling of the room a bit and then having a poured concrete porch put in to replace your wood one?

I would, but it is a wrap around porch.
