I would have grabbed a shovel, if it was outside the city limits the first thing I can grab from the safe.

My Mom used to pay me a bounty of $15 for every woodchuck I shot in the backyard.  I did pretty well for a summer before they were mostly extinct from our property.

Folks still live in the same place and the chucks are back to decimate the garden.  My Dad has become a big softy (towards animals only) in his old age though and won't shoot them.

I saw a huge one fight our neighbor's German Shepherd one day and it was frightening.  I had no idea how viscous those bastards could be when cornered.

I had the same  problem  . . . . . . He was charging me from 125 yards away, couldn't take the chance, so . . . . . .

I had NO OTHER CHOICE

Damn I had one of those in my yard when I lived up north for a very short period of time. (S)he was cute and never attacked me. Thank God... that thing wasn't small and with me being so short it's legs probably weren't much shorter than mine. I'd have been a goner.

I will be heading up there in just over a week for a windsor chairmaking class.  I could help them eliminate the problem, Very quietly, in exchange for a Peteys lobster roll.

A ground hog almost took out my old black lab's eye in a fight.  They can put the hurt on a dog.  He did kill it, but he was bleeding like crazy.  Luckily vet was open and they got him fixed up quick, the things teeth barely missed his right eye ball.  He was quite a dog.

And a couple years ago at the chairmaking school, they had a horny young moose try to mate with one of th student's pickup truck.

on the Moose.

Dat F150...

My dog also got ripped up by a chuck.  Dog came in happy as a clam, shook her head and blood sprayed out onto the ceiling and wall.  She guided me back to where she had cornered the chuck into a cavity in the stone wall.

I took care of the chuck and we buried it in our boot hill.  Dog healed up fine but now she sees chucks as "game on" for revenge.

Some cattle ranchers will pay you to dust these critters.

I just do it for free use of their land.
