GMD

It's been 20 years and $40 billion and the results have been mixed.

Anyone have the inside scoop?

Im missile warning, not defense. But, i thought id heard that GBMD was cancelled. Im a little out of thre loop, as of late. Ill see what i can dig up.

And what the hell happened to my auto fill feature on my tablet??

ETA: looks like i was wrong, still employed. Good. Just needs some refinement.

20 years and $40 billion is not enough refinement?

$40B to do what no one else can do is pretty cheap.

What's $40B?  The cost of one nuke on one American City?  Two, maybe three weeks of FSA money?

Well worth it IMO.  But I'm biased:  I closed out the last 10 years of my engineering career on GMD and it was the best 10 years.

So, when will it be up and running? I hope it succeeds. It's an awesome accomplishment if it does.

One GMD Interceptors, some UEWR radars and the command and control system became operational at Fort Greely, AK Oct. 2004.

ETA: to clarify

I have a lot of scoop. But these threads always turn into shit shows and for the most part what little I can share I don't because of the fucktardary of GD. I used to think it was goofy that they'd run SME's off. Well I understand why those folks left now.

I will say this. Kinetic interception of an ICBM with an ICBM is more complex then most people can wrap their feeble little minds around here. GMD works ok and will continuously be getting better.

The two posts above me know what they are talking about.

I have no doubt it is complex as hell. More difficult than hitting a bullet with a bullet due to the speeds, altitude, and possible countermeasures used. That's why I said it will be an awesome accomplishment if it succeeds.

I was involved with Standard Missile when it was produced by GD in Pomona, CA, BITD. I was a nontechnical nobody, but they still insisted that we watch classified films about the system's capabilities and it's performance.

This is why I'm interested in GMD. It's light years ahead of what SM1 and SM2 could do back then and it's amazing that they came so far in relatively little time. It's amazing stuff.

I would guess that GMD is one of the largest and most complex defense systems ever built by man.

Consider that it has facilities in about 11 time zones from Great Britain to AK (and it used to go west all the way to HI), four major radars (Beale, Cobra Dane Upgrade, RAF Fylingdales and Thule; 5 if you include the SBX-1), with two more radars on the way (Clear and Cape Cod), two missile fields (FGA and VAFB) and a major command and control center (Schriever AFB, CO).
