Uh.....reasons.

Sheesh

because pistol belts should always be worn in fatigues to highlight the fat bodies.

because if they didn't the pistol would chafe them.

Same reason they wore a beret and combat boots with class As. They drew attention to themselves.

Seriously. At the time they were still fairly new and drawing attention to themselves was important for recruiting. I wasn't downing them. The Marines are careful to "brand" themselves well also. It's a smart thing to do from the recruiting and retention aspect.

Because their rifle belts were only for dress uniforms.

That did immediately leap to mind.

OP, while the movie is cool and all, it does not reflect reality.

Under arms. Pistol belt, mag pouch, and helmet. Saw dad dressed like that many times in the seventies.
Same as it was in the early eighties when I was in.
Things are probably different now.

Looks like Fort Polk.

Damn went and looked at the link, damn if I wasn't right. Ft Polk.

When I was at Ft. Hood in the late 80's our sister battalion 1/41 Inf. 2AD wore pistol belts all the time.

They also did Battalion PT  in matching uniforms a lot.

Unless it was required we wore anything we wanted in 3/41

Which is why you were the inferior battalion.

Nope. I grew up around a bunch of them (fathers friends), most of them were nuts. When I went in it wasn't something I wanted. My brother turned down a chance. He was a 31v with a 13b secondary. Top 1-2% of his mos on the sqt.

I'm a cav scout, so I know how to sham, drink coffee, and how/where to hide in the motor pool at Ft Knox.
