Ray Kurzweil, Google's chief futurist, laid out what he thinks the next few decades will look like in an interview with Playboy. Kurzweil is one of the biggest believers in The Singularity, the moment when humans — with the aid of technology —will supposedly live forever. He's chosen the year 2045 because, according to his calculations, "The nonbiological intelligence created in that year will reach a level that’s a billion times more powerful than all human intelligence today." But even before 2045, Kurzweil thinks we could begin the deathless process. "I believe we will reach a point around 2029 when medical technologies will add one additional year every year to your life expectancy," he told Playboy. "By that I don’t mean life expectancy based on your birthdate, but rather your remaining life expectancy." A lot will have to happen in the next 30 years to make that a reality, but Kurzweil isn't fazed: He predicts that nano machines capable of taking over for our immune system (to fix problems like cancerous cells and clogged arteries) and connecting our brains to the cloud will be available by then. He likens that change as the next step in our evolution, the same way our ancestors developed to use the frontal cortex 2 million years ago. The benefits, according to Kurzweil, will be significant. It's yet to be seen if his plans will pan out, but Kurweil considers dying before the singularity to be a failure on his part, so he's adopted a strict diet with the hope of making it to 2045 and living forever. Oh goody. I get to be 90 years old forever...somehow I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea. |

The stupidest, most worthless, uneducated, hateful, spiteful, selfish piece of trash humans living forever?
That will lead to the extinction of the entire species. Imagine welfare, not for 75 years, but 1000. |

Why would you want to?
I sure as hell don't want to be able to call a 110 year old man a "Damn kid" |

nope, forever is way too long, and doctors told me when I was 10 there would probably be a cure for juvenile diabetes before I could drive. that didn't exactly pan out either...

Imagine the worst dictator this world has ever had, reigning for eternity.

With the way political correctness is taking all the fun out of everything, what is the point?

Oh, I'm familiar with the concept, just don't think it's going to happen any time soon...meaning my lifetime. Same thing with fusion energy. As far as promises...I'm old, bitter and cynical. Guess how much I believe in promises. |

Normal people will live and die as slaves to what is going to become a transhuman empire. |

I sure hope my ticket out comes in before this nightmare comes to fruition.

View Quote True, but a "effective cure" might be coming in the next couple of years if the human trial pans out on this tech: http://www.biopharmadive.com/news/jj-viacyte-team-up-on-a-potential-stem-cell-therapy-cure-for-type-1-dia/413687/ I've been thinking about signing up for the trial once they are installing therapeutic doses if the first trial ends well |

C.S. Lewis - The Abolition of Man:
...what we call Man's power over Nature turns out to be a power exercised by some men over other men with Nature as its instrument. ... At the moment, then, of Man's victory over Nature, we find the whole human race subjected to some individual men, and those individuals subjected to that in themselves which is purely natural' — to their irrational impulses. Nature, untrammelled by values, rules the Conditioners and, through them, all humanity. Man's conquest of Nature turns out, in the moment of its consummation, to be Nature's conquest of Man. Every victory we seemed to win has led us, step by step, to this conclusion. All Nature's apparent reverses have been but tactical withdrawals. We thought we were beating her back when she was luring us on. What looked to us like hands held up in surrender was really the opening of arms to enfold us for ever. View Quote |

I don't think Death will ever be conquered the way he envisions................It has already been conquered, but not on this side of the river

Err, don't we kinda need to die? I mean from a medical, specifically neurological /psychology standpoint, not religious or anything. Wouldn't a person eventually go insane?
Decades and decades of memories piling up. Eventually forgetting things you used to love and cherish. Hell, your perception of time would get all wacky. 20 years ago i thought a year crawled by and it would be forever until i got my drivers license. Now, fuck, shit it feels like Christmas was last week. |

LOL.... We can't even keep people from getting cancer. I have zero faith in our ability to conquer death.
|
|
I would suggest that people who don't die are not human. Couple of ways to go with that...

This century's arfcom teeners will get to bitch about next century's teeners.
But who wants to live forever anyway? |

By 2062 you'll get a new car! And you'll get a new car! New cars for everyone!

Kurzweil is great. The Law of Accelerating returns is a good read. I recommend his book "The Singularity is Near" as well. According to him we're in the upward curve of exponential technological growth. Picture the difference between the years 1400 to 1500. Or 1700 to 1800. Not a lot changed. But from 1900 to 2000... Holy crap. The next 100 years will be equal to around 20,000 years of growth. It's insane to think about.

|
Another problem of getting rid of dying by natural causes is that your chances of a violent death go up exponentially.
Death does not like to be cheated. |

You will die. Accidents will happen to everyone given enough time. Even if you have repair nanites keeping you fit and young, if I put you in a wood chipper they might put your body back together, but wouldn't "you" and your memories be dead?
It would be cool to have them clamp off the arteries to a severed limb like a crocodile can! |
|
If I can afford it, I'm gonna do it. I don't believe it will make us truly immortal (there will, after all, be diseases, accidents and crime/war), but if I can pick between dying of buttcrack cancer at the age of 87 or splattering all over the ground in an orbital skydiving accident at the age of 292, I'm picking the second.
Unless there's cyborg prostitutes. I'll probably blow all my money on cyborg prostitutes before getting the life extension stuff. |
|
I don't want to die, but I'm not useful enough to deserve to live forever.
