Started playing a couple months ago.

I practiced at the driving range a few times, went out on the course and did mediocre for a beginner I guess (22 over par ). Back to the driving range a few times and now I'm STARTING to be able to drive better and place shots with the 3, 7 and 9 irons - I can hit maybe 3/5 shots where I want.

It's fun - especially those rare times you hit the ball and it feels like a marshmallow and goes 250 or lands EXACTLY where you wanted, WOOT!

So I've played a grand total of three times now... I'm hooked. Anyone else a recent convert to the game? (btw... you know you're hooked when you can actually WATCH it on TV for more than 5 minutes )

Oh and just so this thread won't be a total waste - what's the funniest/best/most fun "Golf movie"?

* Caddyshack
* Happy Gilmore
* Tin Cup

That experience happened to me exactly three times in two seasons.

I broke all my clubs after I shanked on into a water hazzard, walked off the course, and, never played again.

I hate golf........Because I suck at it.

I work right next to the municipal golf course, I've played 18 three times but it just didn't do anything for me.  I'll probably not play again.

But I do hit the 19th hole almost every day after work for a little decompression before going home...

Happy Gilmore.

When I get another job, after I pay off my debt to a friend, I'm getting a set of clubs and some lessons.

Well you're only supposed to count the shots that land in the fairway right? Just like baseball - out of bounds doesn't count right?

I've never played, and I honestly don't see the attraction.  Why would you want to spend your time playing golf when you could spend it shooting, or fishing, or something not likely to cause a coronary?

Whatever you do do not get hooked on Golf Club Exchange.  Virtually new clubs at cheap prices.  Buying new golf clubs is like a powerful drug over which you have no control.

Best thing ever is to go out at sunrise and be first on the course. With a nicely designed and landscaped course, dew on the ground, slight haze still tobe burned off by the rising sun ..it has an amazing feel to it.

You're not the first one on the course, Bastiat!

THere are those who wake up at crazy hours just to be there before you and prepare the course for your amusement.  They toil. They dig.  They mow.  They sweat.  They Bleed.  We work hard.

Depends on the course and their schedules.

I've gone on courses where it's completely undisturbed - no footprints, cart tracks, or tractor tracks on the course - you can see that your footprints are the only thing in the dew covered grass (which is why waterproof golf shoes are important!)

Sometimes I've run into them changing the cups a few holes in, or doing some basic maintenance work. But otherwise it's just me and the people I'm playing with - followed by a couple other diehards on the course.

I tried it for real once, didn't get the appeal.  But there's no doubt that it's more interesting than minature golf, which I had done about ten times before playing golf for real.

Strangely though, I was a lot better at driving than putting, even though I had way more experience putting.

I played 9 holes this afternoon and shot a 42...decent for me this early in the year.
