Just gave my computer a little tune up.

Installed a 120 gig external drive, copied about 25% of basic data files on to the external and freed up the C drive for my operating system.

Then I replaced the 128MB memory cards with 256MB cards (the max my system would support for a total of 512MB of RAM).

And now this thing is just zipping along.

Anyone want to buy a 6 month old 128MB memory card? You guys with only 128MB of RAM will have a open slot for an extra card and can double your memory.

I got 2 of them, $50 each delivered.

I got 96Mb RAM and 4Gb HD with only about 300Mb disk space left. Needless to say this POS crawls like a slug and tends to lock up if I have too many applications open.

I'm getting a new computer soon.

Running a Celron 400 here.. 190somemeg of RAM, lots of drive space.

Wait until I get that P4 2.4 or 2.53, 512Mb of RAM 100gig serial AT drive
Now that will be a speed increase.

I find it strange how we grow accustomed to speed. I am running a 1.33ghz o/c to 1.8 with 1gig of memory, 4 x 40gig drives and I feel the need to upgrade this box in the worst way..

All I do is surf the net so its really all I need.

Although I would like a tablet or notebook so I don't have to wheel this thing around on a cart.

It would be nice to be able to use something the size of a magazine rather than a peice of furniture.

Maybe your account is a goof and just here to bust my balls but...

I paid about $125 for the 256 mem cards, I figure a 128 should be worth at least a 1/3 or so + s/h. Got these from Gateway so maybe they are higher quality or maybe I just paid more.

Either way I'm not trying to lose money.

Steyr, I don't doubt that's what you payed for that memory.  But the prises have dropped signifigantly.  In my area I can buy a 256 memory stick for $45 brand new.  Electronic are just like that.  In a year that memory will be worth nothing.

Just the facts, not trying to bust your balls.

Umm, I just paid $125 each for the 256s this week. So obviously there is some kind of difference. I imagine one at 1/3 of the price is probably somewhat less reliable.

I'd trade ya for pair of only slightly run-over 'possums :)
Sorry, man; regardless of brand-name or higher quality, for 40 bucks I can buy 128megs of memory brandnew. $19 after mail-in rebate, if I'd bother to send them in.

Congratulations on the system upgrade though.
60 Gig IBM drive, 16x48x Toshiba DVD-ROM, 32x4x4 TEAC CD-RW, 32 MB nVidia 2xAGP, 1.4 Ghz Celery II, 768 megs of RAM here, similar specs on the other 2 computers in the house. Is it time to upgrade yet? The board is from '99 after all [rolleyes]

Kar98, I have a very similar system.  Some of the newer software won't run on it because it is too slow!!!

I think it's time for a P4 for me.  My 30gig HDD, which when I bought I tought was huge, is now full!!

I need a P4, 100gig HDD, and 128 video.  Anything else is just to slow anymore IMHO

Actually, the only things that are starting to bug me is the slow video card and the fact that the on-board IDE controllers are a tad on the obsolete side.

Actually no. For warranty issues I had to buy the cards from Gateway. In addition I had to determine compatability with my system.

Found them for only $20 less than I paid on pricewatch.

Well Gateway is the problem.  They make everything differant so you have too buy from them.  That's why your memory is so expensive.

I doubt your memory will work in other computers.

Dells and HP and most other makers are 100% compatible.

You got ripped off, Steyr.  You can order 512MB PC133 Micron Technology memory modules online for $48 a piece.  That's not crap or generic RAM either, by any stretch of the imagination ... it's industry standard.  What you paid for 256MB modules is absurd.

No, I found the same mem cards on price com for $20.00 less than I paid. It will work in other computers Gateway just sells some higher quality shot for theirs. I didn't buy $7.00 mem cards.

$20 each. So that means if I went with pricewatch I'd have saved $40 on the pair. Not a big deal for several reasons.

1. I wouldn't have gotten tech support to confirm that they are compatable to my system specifications.

2. Gateway is a retailer, not a wholesaler and the markup percentage is pretty minimal.

3. I got more important things to do than cry about "Gateway charged me $40 more than the next guy, they are a giant rip off and I'll never do business with them again." [;)]
