Hey Guys,
I've been messing with my system for a few days now, and probably have read everything I can find, and still find myself a bit confused. Two weeks ago, I bought a 1987 Ford F250 6.9l IH Diesel. These have the Glow Plug system that is the same as the 7.3 Non-Powerstrokes, a solid state set up, not the older style like on the earlier 6.9l trucks. I'm having some sort of battery drain problem. New Alt/voltage regulator and batteries load test well. It 'seems' that my problem is that it's getting drained faster than it can charge, not that it's not charging. I'm hoping that this battery issue is related to my glow plug relay. The glow plug relay cycles (clicks) every two seconds. Not just before start up, but after start up, and often when I've been driving down the road for 20 minutes. A few questions: 1) Would this relay clicking on and off be enough of a draw to overpower my charging system and drain my juice? 2) Would the cycling of the relay be caused by the glow plug controller going out, or is the relay just dying? Something else I don't understand causing the continuous cycling? 3) If it is the relay and or GPC, would I solve this problem by just doing the Glow Plug Controller Bypass that lots of guys have done to light off their glow plugs manually from a switch mounted in the cab? Thanks for your insights!!! |

Yes, absolutely 2) Would the cycling of the relay be caused by the glow plug controller going out, or is the relay just dying? Something else I don't understand causing the continuous cycling? Could be either ,but I would lean towards the controller, if the relay failed it would stay on continously 3) If it is the relay and or GPC, would I solve this problem by just doing the Glow Plug Controller Bypass that lots of guys have done to light off their glow plugs manually from a switch mounted in the cab? Probably the cheapest solution is installing a manual over ride, just don't leave it on, I would install an indicator light alerting me when it's on Thanks for your insights!!! |
