I'm in academy and next week is the big week to get sprayed with OC. I've heard a few tips from the senor class, but i was wondering if anyone on here has any other tips. The worst part of it all is that we have to qualify the following day with our sidearms.

SOOOOO, lets hear em'

Do your best not to inhale the OC when they spray it. If you do, you'll have a very difficult time breathing.

Don't be "that guy" that has a complete meltdown and is unable to function. You'll be in pain, but you can fight through it.

Be careful for the reactivation when you take a shower.

[#2]
Plus one to not being that guy.
The other half of our class got it today, and one guy rolled around in the dirt crying like a baby.
The instructors were disgusted to say the least.

Don't panic, and get your eyes open as soon as possible.
It's gonna hurt, trust me, but the sooner you open your eyes, the sooner the pain stops.

[#3]
Don't rub your eyes, don't be a bitch slave to the water hose. Just open your eyes (hold them open manually if necessary) and walk around, getting a bit of breeze in your face.

Remember that if you take some cross-contamination on the street, you won't be able to call time out.

It sucks. Alot.

Probably one of, if the not the worst, experiences ever. 10x worse than the CS chamber. It goes away though. I got sprayed with 2 can at the same time, as I was the class president. Not that it really mattered, but I got a nice face full of the stuff. I recovered fairly quick, but when I was in the locker room changing, I must have rubbed my eye, because it reactivated and I started running around naked swearing up a storm like a chicken with it's head cut off.

You'll be good as new in about 45 min to and hour. Make sure to go get some beers with your classmates after

As others have said, you can fight through it. We have to run through a few stations and fight attackers and hit bags and shit, then draw down on a suspect and aquire a sight picture. I had to hold my eye open with one hand. Fun stuff. Good luck!

I have been pepper sprayed more than any three people I know, because every time I do it to a class, I do it too.

When you first get sprayed, you think, "Oh.  That's not so bad.", then 10 seconds later you want to peel your face off.  The good news is that I've started to get used to it, and spicy food doesn't seem so spicy after awhile...  It still sucks, though.

Tips:

1.  Do not inhale.  This is very important.  Take a deep breath, and exhale continuously while being sprayed.
2.  Close your eyes.
3.  If you want to 'cheat', apply some form of dermablock (barrier cream, liquid glove, etc.) to your face, neck, chest, and arms.  Your eyes will still sting, but you won't feel it on your skin.  This is very effective.  I have demonstrated my 'ultimate manhood' in class by being sprayed again and again while wearing the dermablock.  Just be sure to rinse for a long time before you start to use soap.
3A.  *** WARNING *** Water flows with gravity.  If you stand naked in a shower and run the shower on your face, the OC will wash down onto your manhood.  If you think it's bad in your eyes, just get some on your manhood.  Don't ask me how I know this.
4.  Whatever you do, do NOT touch your face or rub your eyes.  You will DESPERATELY want to do this sometimes.  Do NOT wipe with *anything*.
5.  There is a 'neutralizer' product that some of the OC companies sell.  If you use this product, the OC will mostly wear off in 30 minutes.  If you don't use the product, it takes about a half hour.  Yes, I did type that correctly.
6.  Get a plastic spray bottle and fill it with water.  Add three or four tablespoons of Johnson's Baby Shampoo.  Shake well.

After you get sprayed, go get the bottle, and slowly and gently spray the OC off your face and out of your eyes.  I have found that this better than standing in the shower or jumping into a swimming pool.

Spraying with the Johnson's BEFORE you get OC'd can help, but not so much.

Using Dawn dishwashing detergent works better, but is real hell on your eyes.  It's actually worse than the OC in some cases.  Use the Johnson's.  Don't try to be clever.

I hear Simple Green will help get the stuff out of your eyes.  I didn't try it, but found that letting as much air into your face is the best way to get over it.  A fan would be most helpful.

Tried it.  While non-toxic, Simple Green is not PH neutral.  It burns like fire in your eyes...

When I got sprayed it was not bad until I had to do a shoot no shoot and open my eyes. The baby shampoo worked best for me. Also when you go to the water and the water is cold it will take your breath away and you will feel like you cant breath but stay calm and breath. We got hit with the street issued Saber red. The next day we where tazed and that sucked to but after the 5 sec you where done. I'd take getting tazed any day over spray.
8/5/2008 8:47:34 PM EDT
[#10]
ya, thats what we get hit with (saber red). I'm already sick of this heat in AZ and i was guessing that its just going to be worse when i'm trying to breath (recover) from the OC.

I know we have to keep our gun in our holster while someone is trying to rip it away and at the same time we are getting beat over the head with a pad. After that we have to identify a weapon in an instructors hand, order them to drop it, give commands to get into a prone handcuff posision, then cuff them. Then finally hit a dummy for a little bit. After thats all recovery.

Thanks for the tips and tricks. I'll try looking for the recovery stuff that some places sell. I've heard of people forgetting about their manhood and taking a shower, but i prefer it get beat into my head than no hear it at all.

Thanks again guys!

Get a spray of oc in the face (try not to inhale...especially through the nose), then put your arms up above your head and wait for the burning.  Then begin to run around in small circles and scream like a little girl.

Just kidding.  Good luck.  You could try and get some wash that counteracts the oc from a manufactureer of oc.  Othere than that.....cool water...lots of it.

OH MAN what he said.

shower with your drawers on amigo.  I think the longer you spend under the hose the longer it takes to recover.  Idunno, everyone is different, but I think I did better by spending just a few minutes under the hose and they trying to get fresh air in my eyes.

it effects people with different levels of severity.  Maybe you will be the 4% it does not effect or whatever it is?   but I seriously doubt it.  I think that small % must just be some billy bad ass in the desert or something.

I've been sprayed twice and it's the 2 worst moments in my life.  I'm 100% ok right afterwards except that my eyes spot weld shut and I can't get them back open.

What worked best for me was to go to the shower and get it off everywhere I could and then stood under the stream and tried to get my eyes open.  It took a while and was like opening my eyes in pool but that is the quickest way I can get it out.

+1 I said OOOOO f----when it happened to me. Went from hot to cold water in less then 1/2 a sec

We had to take a two second blast at 24 inches from the face with Freeze Plus P. Don't get shook up and just fight through it. If you are on the street sooner or later your going to get cross sprayed. To me it was worse than the Taser but some say otherwise. We had a guy in my class that inhaled the stuff and went into distress and had to be taken to the ER by way of fire rescue.......You'll do fine don't sweat it.

some assface almost broke my nose when i was in recovery because he was freaking out and flailed his elbows.

We had to run about a 1/4 mile then do pushups and jumping jacks, and while we were doing the jumping jacks we were asked several questions.  While answering one of the questions, I took about a 2 sec burst of saber red 10% fog to the face.  Most went in my mouth and up my nose.  Then  I had to search for the subject, and fight, then detain him.  Once finished I had to get on the radio and call out my situation.
Have to say that it sucked a big one.  My eyes hurt but I couldnt breath for shit.

My advice, once your done, wash all the spray that is visible off of your face off with either baby shampoo or some none oily soap.  Then just suck it up and let it dry.  Once it drys it will crystalize and will slowly go away.  Just watch out for the shower that night or even the next few days.  Water tends to reactivate it.  Good luck

What made my OC experience so bad was inhaling a bunch of it. I literally wasn't drawing in ANY air for a good 30 seconds. I was the closest I have ever been to panic mode.

Sure.

I started using that after a student tried to do just that.  I wasn't there, but I saw the video from the other instructor.  He still hasn't sent me a copy...  Student gets sprayed and stands there for a few seconds, holding his breath.  Instructor tells him to breathe.  The kid doesn't for about 30 seconds, and finally sucks in a huge breath, and immediately starts screaming.  Then he does the worst thing possible - he rubs his eyes and tries to wipe it off.  He goes into panic mode black and starts clawing at his face.  He managed to tear the lower eyelid of his right eye before the instructor managed to restrain him.  They cuffed his hands behind his back and sat him up.  The instructor grabs a bucket of water to pour on the guy, but before he can get any water on him, the guy flips over and starts rubbing his face ON THE BLACKTOP.

They finally manage to get him cleaned up, calmed down, and somewhat sane.

Kid didn't pass the academy, which is probably fortunate.

I've seen people react in different ways to OC.  I, personally, have an almost uncontrollable desire to wipe.  Fortunately, I've managed to avoid it.  I've had students throw total fits, and some I was worried about.  I've never seen anybody freak out as bad as that kid, though...

1 part Sugar mixed with 1 part  baby shampoo. The sugar helps break down the oloresin. Really rub that sugar into your skin and eyes. Wash for a good 2 minutes. It will be tempting to go for the water to rise. Just get enough water to get wet and then scrub scrub scrub then rinse for a long time. Its ok to get the baby shampoo in your eyes.

The protocol I use is 1-2 seconds from not less than 24 inches away.  Not more than 2 seconds.  Coating and painting isn't useful.  The idea is to expose the student and let them work with it.

I"ve been on the job for 15 years next month and have carried/been sprayed with OC for probably 12 of those. Getting sprayed in the academy will not be the last time.........

TGMoore is right about the suger/baby shampoo. I got hit with Top Cop ( cross the eyes - was suppost to be across the brow ) and down the nose starting at my forehead. Take the spray, fight through it, and lather up the mixture in your hands and PAT it into your eyes and face. I was lucky and got to sit in a car with the AC blowing in my eyes afterward ( you recover 10X faster )

Take it like a man. Lower your head and rinse your face don't pour water on your head because it will come down on your body. Don't rub your eyes or skin. Our chemical agents day saw us getting hit with CS and CN, that was pretty crappy for the few seconds we were in the midst of the cloud gasping for air.

Then, we got hands on with the old 50k Scoville pepper spray foggers practicing deploying it and going hands on, got to experiene cross contamination and get a taste for the stuff.   I think I managed to get out the Ralph Wiggum quote "My boogers are spicey" just once.

Then we got nailed with LE10 2million scoville streamer to the face to end our day of chemical agents exposure.   WHOOO, that stuff sucks.   Took roughly 10 seconds for it to hit me full force and it sucked.   Had to run a small course fighting after exposure and simulate cuffing at the end of the physical exertion course, yeah you can fight through it just mentally prepare yourself.

Hit the hose for decon just once making sure your face is lower or below your chest so water drips off your face and not down your chest or towards your groin.    You'll feel like you've got the worst sunburn of your life for 1/2 hour or more.    Some of the guys in our class still felt the effects 1-2 days later.   I know my eyes were sensitive to dry air, whenever the AC kicked on in the class room I started blinking a LOT.    I took about a 1 hour shower that night after exposure trying to make sure to get it washed off.    I shaved my head and face with a fresh razor to see if I could exfoliate the skin that might contain some of the top layers of skin that might have OC imbedded in it.

All I can say is enjoy the experience.   I would volunteer to go in the first wave rather than the last wave, more time to decontaminate that way and less tension/anxiety leading up to your exposure as you watch classmates go through it.

At our academy, I swear they reload the bottles from active volcanoes. It's like pressurized lava. I was red for about 24 hours. My car did not have A/C and it was like 115 outside. I used the blue ice packs in my lunch box to cool myself on the way home. It felt so good until I moved the ice pack.

I thought I'd rolled around in fire at the time. My food tasted like burning that night.

Its finally over! That sh!t is liquid fire! It didn't start affecting me untill half way through my scenario. I had to pry my eye open with one hand and give orders at gun point then arrest. B4 that i had to hit a dummy along with retain my gun while they beat me over the head with a bad. It didn't hurt at all until i was all done. It felt like a horrible sun burn. Got short of breath a little, but i didn't die.

There were some people that yelled, moaned, screamed...whatever, it wasn't that bad. A few people couldn't control themselves and started hyperventilating.

Like some people said there wasn't much that helped, just face the wind and pry your eyes open.

I'm just happy its over!

LOL

I have been a Spray Instructor for about 10 years so I have taken (willingly, add numerous more on the street by trigger happen patrol men, LOL) about a dozen full on sprays to the face with various brands. They all suck! btw.

Just act "normal" when u get sprayed (I know sounds stupid and impossible). Dont try to hold your breath because as soon as the spray hits u and starts to burn ur body will automatically gasp and taken in a big breath.

Don't rub, we don't even use water unless ur actually gonna be under running water, bring a change of clothes so that you dont get after effect on the ride home. It will fire back up in the shower, so use cool water at first. Stand into the wind and after a couple of minutes start to force your eyes open. Laugh at yourself when u realize that you have snot running from ur nose to the ground, LOL. Also if u wear contacts make sure they are out and stay out the rest of the day.

Lastly TAKE IT LIKE A MAN and do NOT complain (either before like "Why do we have to do this, we dont have to get shot to know it works!" or during). Take out of this experience the knowledge that you can fight through this in real life if needed and win.

Also do not worry about the next day at the range, unless u have some kind of major reaction (which is very rare) you will be full recovered (if you do absolutley nothing) in less than 45minutes.

Hope this helps and remember the instructors are not laughing at you........OK they are but its funny.

johnson's baby shampoo, cleared up 10x faster for me than those who didn't wash with it, and I didn't recontaminate later that night or the next day.

yeah, just man up and get through it.  and yeah, the first 5-10 seconds you're like "oh, that's it?" and then it hits you and it sucks...but i'd do it again.

oh yeah, and get some clear eyes or something for the following day, because for me my tear ducts ran dry trying to flush the OC out so I eventually had to get clear eyes because my eyes were still sensitive and dry the next day.
