I was watching one of those "How it’s made" last night on the science channel. Pretty cool show showing the machining, grinding etc that goes into making a specific Gerber (assisted opening or auto opening knife don’t know which). It had a tanto like blade. Anyway at the end of the program, the narrator said that the blade is so sharp and strong that the knife is restricted by law to military or LEO. Anyone know the knife? Plus is there actually a knife that is restricted? I don't buy it.

I'm almost positive that "How It's Made" is made by a Canadian studio, so what might be legal here, might be illegal in Canada.

Gerber does make a few autos. That would be the only reason why. Consequently those are the only Gerbers that look nice enough to own IMO.

You can buy one, Gerber is just covering their ass. There was a thread here a long time ago about a member getting pissed about the same thing on their site and a website designer for Gerber was a member here and he changed it.

The red part is bull shit. It's restricted because it is spring loaded and a "switch blade". There is ways a civilion can buy them legaly.

I carry a Benchmade AutoStryker 9100SBK every day.

Not sure whether automatics are legal in Canada though.

I found it. Prolly should have Googled it first. This is the knife I saw on How It's Made.
http://www.tactical-life.com/online/tactical-knives/military-approved-gerber-autos/

The thing has a Federal National Stock Number (NSN) - Plus it's an auto opener. That's were they got the "Restricted" part from. Good thing autos are legal here in Texas. :)

I was under the impression that autos were illegal in Texas, but that it was seldom enforced. Have they finally changed the law to make it officially legal, or am I just stupid? (both?)

A few years ago they did a joint effort auto with Emerson called the Alliance. Both companies on their own make great products, but the overwhelming numbers of reviews for this knife say it sucked.

Guess I got lucky.  On my last tour Benchmade and Gerber donated us some pretty sweet gear.  I got a Gerber DET multi-tool with the C4 punch and crimp.  Got a sweet auto knife from Benchmade as well that I still carry to this day.

Both are great companies in my book.

It was my understanding that they were legal to own, but illegal to carry here.

Not at all. Both Benchmade and Gerber make great knives, with Benchmade having an especially well earned reputation for great auto knives. My reference was to the one auto specifically done as a joint venture between Emerson and Gerber called the Alliance. Great looking knife, but sure didn't get many accolades considering which companies were responsible for it.
