Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Generator question

Decided to get one for the house.  Who makes the best one? Are Honda or Yamaha worth the extra money?  Tried a 5000 watt cheap one that didn't work so well.  Should I go to 6600 watts?

Generators that have a Honda engine a much quieter than others like Briggs and Stratton.  The generator itself does not need to be Honda though.  Also, check to see if it has an automatic idle down feature.  This lets the unit idle slower when the power is not being used.  Electric start is nice too.

i bought a generac 5500wt at lowes last month for 499.00 8500wt surge. runs almost everything in my house except the heat pump.

has a briggs and stratton 10hp engine. So far i have been VERY happy with it.

Good advice from 2WhiskeyP.  Another superb manufacurer is Kohler----possibly the "best" unit you can buy in terms of quality.
