I thoroughly enjoyed GK.

Especially the fate of the real SGT MAJ Sixta.

Sometimes shit works itself out right.

I picked that book up on a whim and couldn't put it down.

In one of those rare occurrences, the series really did the book justice.

I need to watch it again.

"Fruity Rudy" was actually played by Rudy Reyes himself. I thought that was cool and funny.

"Let the hadjis hit the floor!
Let the hadjis hit the floor!"

I was so surprised to learn that "fruity Rudy" was actually a Marine.

I went down a rabbit hole for a day,

turns out the MAJ that was portrayed in that series, didn't appreciate it, and did like a line-by-line rebuttal of everything on some three-post wordpress site, which was meh, but then, in the comments, he got his ass lit up by other people who were there, and by the books' author.

As long as you look at it like a movie set in those times, and less a documentary, I liked it a lot.

Generation Kill: General Mattis

Read the book first then the series came out. One of the few mini-series that had me glued to it. Great cast. Person and Colbert' exchanges are quotable and easily the most entertaining.

There are a few more Force Recon guys in it other than Reyes, they are minor characters. One that stuck out was a guy from Alpha who was down in the initial large engagement outside the city just before Mattis/Dowdy(sp?)/Godfather exchange on the bridge. He has a jam/FTF and he clears it with his left hand never taking his rifle off target. AgaIn all the other guys who are Mil in it are minor characters.

Skarsgard was a Swedish Marine before jumping into acting and he was perfect for Colbert.

I did not like the portrayal of  some of the officers and Marines in the series.

Have always enjoyed the series and it is a great adaptation from the book. It sees annual viewing rotation in my home along with Band of Brothers.

I felt bad for the LT...he was trying to do the right thing, taking care of his guys, and gets fucked by the CoC.

Fick was my least favorite character of the series. Yes I was a Marine Officer. The depiction of the other officers being grossly incompetent and Fick being the guy that did the right thing all the time was exaggerated to the extreme.  Officers and staff nco's make decisions that are usually not popular with the Marines, and for the most part the negative portayal of the officers and snco's was reflecfed in the series. But again this series was taken at the point of veiw of the Marines and reporter in Ficks platoon.  So of course the other officers and snco's were viewed in a different light. I did not read the book or Fick's book.

I've read both. Fick's book was a lot less one sided in the portrayal of his fellow officers and SNCO's.
The actions depicticted in GK make up a smaller portion of his book, and while most (if not all) of the events portrayed in the books line up, his point of view was less of "I'm the only one with a clue" as seen in GK.

In reality, officers in a unit hang out with one another, pre deployment and during the down times- if one of us was fucked up we would unfuck each other. ( in private) From the series Fick to me was a guy that was isolated and did not like his fellow officers. Again I did not read the book or Ficks. Sure there is a competive nature amoungst young officers, but the series to me just comes off as it was from Fick's point of view while casting the other officers in a bad light.

Generation kill is pretty good if the point of the show was to portray how a bunch of Marine would act in front of a rolling stones reporter while given tasks to keep them to the sides o the FLOT since they didn't have armor and were not really integral to the mission of the Bn they were supporting that was leading the RCT after Nasaryiah.

I found this article written by a Marine officer that was there that had some rebuttals of Evan Wrights story.

Interesting read.  Not only Lt Col Shoup's perspective of the events, but also Evan Wright's rebuttal in the comments.

Classic how differnet perspectives tell different stories. GK was too Hollywood how it portayed the leadership. Being an officer I trust the Lt Col more than the Rolling Stone writer.
