Me and the wife want to have a garden this year, neither one of us have any experience with it but i really want to learn and have a successful garden.

I have about a 3 foot by 20 foot area to grow in so far we have decided on squash and tomatoes they seem like they will be the easiest to grow and maintain are there any other simple items we can put in there and wont be easy to kill off? would okra be something we could grow? what about other vegetables? strawberries?

What i need to know is the basics how do i need to prepare the ground? will i need fertilizer of some sort? where is the best place to buy seed? how much water do they need?

Oh and the most important when should i start?

I know there are other things i am forgetting but i guess i will find out as i go along.

Get "All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Barthomew".

That will help you in getting started, more than anything else.

Some General Dollar stores have a B&W version for $6.

My advice is start small. Its really easy to tear up a big section of lawn with dreams of vegetables and find yourself overwhelmed with maintaining it. With a few tomatoes I would just stick them in your existing flower beds. If you realyl want to give it a shot buy the book mentioned above (I have both versions) build a small 3x4 or 3x6 or 4x6 raised bed and start off with that.

get your feet wet before jumping in headfirst. Thats my advise. Otherwise, get out and get your hands dirty.

Also, your local library most likely has a copy too, but hurry! Garden season makes garden books disappear!
