Make sure the door operates freely by pulling the emergency release cord while the door is in the closed position. Open and close the door a few times and make sure all of the guide wheels are in the track. The door should operate with very little effort.

Now to check the opener independently from the door. Now with the door open, hit the opener button. The opener should operate without stopping until it locks into the emergency release. Pull the ER and close the door and hit the opener button, the opener should run until it locks into the ER with out stopping.

Is your opener a screw drive or chain drive?

It's binding somewhere.  Mine does the same thing when it rains.  Lightly lube the tracks, and see if that helps.

Check and make sure you aren't having problems with the sensors at ther bottom of the door if they are present

usually it is a loose wire or it got whacked and mis-aimed if the door operates properly when disengaged from the opener

Do these two separate symptoms occur within the same few minutes of testing?  How are your remote batteries?

My simple world solution is to call the manufacturer and ask what they think and/or have a service estimate.  Compare the estimate with the price of a brand new opener.

End result will probably be to install a new opener.  How old is it?  I am running a Genie screw drive with a lifetime in-house warranty.  It was less than $300.

Two good friends were professional installers for a while and all they used was LiftMaster.

Upgrade!  Go with a screw or belt drive, servo motor, code scrambling, etc.
