I cannot open the garage door wirelessly.  I don't think it's a battery problem because it stopped responding to the remote controls, including the outside electronic keypad, on the same day.  I think the problem is with the receiver in the main unit.

This is a Sears opener, 15-20 years old.  I don't have the manual.

What's a good way to troubleshoot it?

Thanks.

You check the breaker for it?

Have you had close lightning hits recently?  That fried one of my openers.

Is it an opener that has the learn button to add remotes?  I'd clear them all out and relearn - see if that works.

It works, just not with a remote control.

Yes to lightning.  I have not opened it yet.  If it has the binary switches, it should be simple.  How does the learn button work?  Do I press it while also pressing the button on the remote control?

It has lived long enough.  Time to replace it with a direct drive Liftmaster from Amazon.

Thanks.  I will keep that in mind if I can't fix this.

Maybe I can help since I just rebuilt my garage door opener gears.  My door opener was over ten years old and then one day (last month) I could hear the motor work but the door didn't go anywhere.  The drive gear is designed to sheer when it can't handle the load.  Look at your drive motor when you try to open your door and report back what is happening first.  I suspect that you can see a gear moving but the door does not follow.  Let me know if this is correct before I go any further.

It works fine when I press the big wired button that is inside the garage.  There's nothing wrong mechanically.  It's just not doing anything with the remote control signal.

That did not do it.  Maybe it's time for a new one.

I've replaced the receiver part of the opener before. Not as expensive or complicated as replacing the whole opener. Can be bought at Home Cheapo.

Liftmaster makes a plug in box that you plug into an electrical outlet. It's the radio receiver and sending unit for the motor.  It comes with wire leads to go to the door opener, and usually 1 to 3 opener clickers.

As long as you have an electrical outlet, and can see the wires leading to the motor it will work.

You can even add it to an existing working receiver and use the existing remotes and frequency/codes and add new ones.

Get the XXX.XXXXXXX number off the back of the opener and look it up.  There are about 200 models, some of which are so outdated or obscure branches of types that there is no fix aside from replacement.

I bought a new Craftsman receiver and installed it.  Works great, only I can't program my existing remotes.  They couldn't help me at Sears, but they gave me a number for Chamberlain, who makes the Craftsman garage door openers and accessories.  They're only Mon-Fri.

New receiver, new remotes, and new keypad.  All works great now.  Thanks.
