I have searched high and low, RTFM and online at Garmin but I have a "picking gnat poo out of pepper" question.  The model is the 60C, a color mapping Garmin.  During the day, I pick up 7-11 satellites with all strength bars plain.  At night on clear, flat ground, some of the satellite signal strength bars have a "D" on them.

What does this "D" mean?  Can't be digital since GPS signals are digital.  BTW, it happens with WAAS enabled and not.

Oh yes, some color Garmins have a $50 rebate offer that isn't widely advertised.  Check out the website.

TIA!

Dead?  Day?

Go to the forum at Geocaching.com and ask there.

Those are the WAAS sats, they have better connection and can be reached at all times they are in the air.(no just at night.) They take up a little more power but it is worth it. If I had my batteries charged for my Etrex I would tell you how to turn them on and off.

D= declination?

IIRC the D does have to do with WAAS.  It stands for differential.

DGPS is exclusive of Wide Area Augmentation System.  Think of WAAS as aviation and DGPS as nautical because WAAS is administered by the FAA and DGPS by USCG.

I don't know.....my 76C works just fine day or night.  I'm at 29.12 N LAT.

BTW, yes the $50 rebate isn't widely advertised but go to the website and submit it and you'll get a nice reward.

From my garmin manual (etrex vista):

When differential correction data has been received for GPS satellites (numbers 32 or below), a 'D' displays in the signal bar beneath the skyview.

WAAS is like secondhand DGPS right?  maybe that is why they chose that explanation.

I went and looked through the 60C manual and you are right...they don't mention the 'Ds' at all.  But they do give a better description of WAAS and DGPS

My Garmin GPSMAP 76S manual, p. 10:

"A 'D' in or above the bar means that differential corrections are being applied to that satellite"
