I'm looking to replace an 8 year old mattress. I have gone to some stores, and I like thenfeel of hybrids and some of the memory foam options. After doing a lot of reading, it seems 99% of literature on mattresses is 99% bullshit. Amazon has memory foam mattresses around $600, and Tempur Pedics can run 2400 for what I was laying on. Consumer Reports differs from the Sleep Like the Dead website which differs from The Underground Mattress website. We are mostly back and stomach sleepers if that matters.

Is there an expert who can help out? I liked the firm rather than plush hybrids, but would like to keep the budget around $1200. I also want it to last and be comfortable for the sammich maker (pic attempt below, she is on the right) who is much smaller than my 260 lb. self. A lot of what I have read says that the big names charge way more for a similar product. Any truth to that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I gambled on an Amazon mattress after giving away my nearly new $900 store bought mattress that I couldn't sleep on.

The memory foam mattresses are for real, and I can't sleep well on anything else now. I like them so much that I have bought two.

Sold mattresses for 4 years, shipped over 12 million dollars in 4 years. With that being said I do like tempur pedics. There foam is higher end then knock offs. In general stores mark up mattresses 400x. 1200 would get you a decent mattress. You really need to lay on them to see if you like them.

I have no way to get a mattress to Ohio or Id use my contacts. Find a salesmen that you can work with then make them drop there prices. Or double up coupons at department store, get the extra 5% off for c/c ect.

We got a higher end hybrid beauti-rest or however it is spelt.

the foam is pretty good and does a great job of pulling the heat away. The springs are terrible and the mattress sags were we sleep, within the first year and I am pretty light weight. I would not buy another one of those.

We got another all foam lower cost mattress for the guest room and its much better.

NO SLEEP NUMBER!!!!   If you even consider it, research the black mold issue, and their warranty.

That's all I have.  In the same boat shopping for something new myself.   Been shopping for a year now.  Not found anything great.

Didn't read OP or thread, but just want to say this in a mattress thread.

DON'T BUY A SLEEP NUMBER if you plan  to do any extracurricular activities other than sleep!  They don't hold up.  Ask me how I know.

I bought a Kingsdown that was on sale, 50% off.  Best $2500 I spent.

Get into the $5000 class of mattresses and it's a whole different world.

Mine also came with a 25 year warranty.

I guess that is my question for any experts. Are the $5000- $2500 beds that much better than a $1000 bed? Is there a happy medium?

Got the Serta 10" memory foam mattress from Sam's Club. Absolutely  love it. Picked it up for  $599 if I remember correctly.

I just got a Casper https://casper.com/mattresses after also using Sleep Number for 15 years. Both are excellent and strangely the non-adjustable Casper are equally comfortable. Never had a single problem with Sleep Number.

I would buy the Casper again.

I had a California King Kingsdown mattress set for about 15 years and it was pretty good. Then my wife really wanted e Tempurpedic but I couldn't get past the sinking feeling Nothing felt firm.  We got the firmest Serta iComfort I could find and have been on it for 4 or 5 years now and we both love it.

Any experience with latex vs memory foam? I would like the bed to comfortably last 10 years (unless that is asking too much. A coworker said he loved his latex bed. Thanks for the replies so far.

Best mattress I ever owned.  Sleep better than I have in 20 years.  Had it over a year now.  I'll research the mold thing, but I'm sure that's rare.  I had a tempur pedic and I couldn't walk, my back bothered me so much.  It was an extra firm with cooling layer and 2 inches of soft foam on top.  Still have the tempur pedic pillows though.  Love them.
