My friend died at home last Tuesday night and wasn't found until Thursday at noon. Burial was Tuesday. The songs that were picked by his mom and kids were all very fitting and it got me to thinking. What songs do you want played at your funeral. The only ones I can think of right now are "Jesus and Momma always loved me", by Confederate Railroad and "Choices'' by George Jones.
Taps at the grave side service is a given. I just hope the guys from Ft Campbell use an actual trumpet player and not a damn jam box. |

Sorry about your friend.
I want "Who wants to live forever" by Queen at mine. |
|
"Nutshell" By Alice In Chains. Actually any AIC unplugged song will do
|
|
Prop me up beside the juke box when I die.
Oooooo that smell, what the hell's that smell. Two good ones. |
|
I want "dirt on the Grave" by Black label society or "in this river"
|

Sorry to hear about your friend. It's tough losing a loved one!
Being of German decent and very interested in WW2. I would like to have "Ich hatte einen Kameraden" played at my funeral. Ich hatte einen Kameraden Once you understand what they're singing, it's very moving! |

"Really Gonna Miss You". Smokie Robinson
http://www.thetemptations.com/ Temptations Forever This song played at graveside will not leave a dry eye, even for the strongest individual. "The Dance" Garth Brooks is a must play. |
|
"Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zep.
"See you on the otherside" by OZZY |

Bagpipe. Singular. More than one takes away too much. Garth Brooke's The Dance is a good one. At my ex's grandmother's funeral they played Holes in the Floor of Heaven. I think everybody cried. I think I held it to just misty eyed. |

Mine funeral will be very short and simple. Those at Arlington always are. Pretty sure they have the music thing down pat...
Arlington Burials |
|
Make it "Wish you were here" and you have a winner Also Amazing Grace with the full Bagpipe, drums regiment |

The 1000-year-old Celtic hymn: Be Thou My Vision
When played and sung (in English) properly, it is incredibly beautiful and moving. |

At my best bud's funeral a few years ago they played Free Bird.

You've Got A Friend - James Taylor
When your down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name, And you know whereever I am I’ll come running, oh yeah baby To see you again. Winter, spring , summer, or fall, All you have to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve got a freind. If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud And soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name and you know where ever I am I’ll comning running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you got to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a freind? People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you. Well they’ll take your soul if you let them. Oh yeah, but don’t you let them. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Oh babe, don’t you know that, Winter spring summer or fall, Hey now, all you’ve got to do is call. Lord, I’ll be there, yes I will. You’ve got a freind. You’ve got a freind. Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a freind. Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a freind. You’ve got a freind. |

"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"
The road is long, with many a winding turn That leads us to who knows where, who knows where But I'm strong, strong enough to carry him He ain't heavy - he's my brother So on we go, his welfare is my concern No burden is he to bare, we'll get there For I know he would not encumber me He ain't heavy - he's my brother If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with sadness That everyone's heart isn't filled with gladness of love for one another It's a long long road from which there is no return While we're on our way to there, why not share And the load, it doesn't weigh me down at all He ain't heavy - he's my brother He ain't heavy - he's my brother, he's my brother, he's my brother |

"Angel Band" from the "O Brother, Where art Thou" soundtrack.

|
adagio for strings by Barber or Nimrod From Enigma Variations - Elgar
|
|
"Just a Closer Walk with Thee" by a good Dixieland band. A slow drag the first two choruses, then on the last chorus, uptempo and dance out the door.

Allison Krauss- I'll Fly Away or Amazing Grace on Bagpipes |
|
I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. that's just awful.
+1 for a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace I actually planned out my funeral service so my loved ones wouldn't have to do it... (made it a resolution after we buried my grandparents and I saw what my mom and her siblings had to go through...) One of the things I included was a list of readings I wanted (All is Well, Miss Me but Let Me Go, and Psalm 23) and a list of "A Bit About Me" questions and answers to augment what they know with the things I've never shared... it's kinda like those games where you have to answer the weird questions like what's your greatest fear, what's your perfect day, what were your favorite family get-togethers... If you want the whole list, IM/email me... I wish my grandparents would have done something like this... As much as you think you know someone, there are always things that aren't shared because they never come up... |
|
Only if played on bagpipes or sung by a gospel choir. |

or Hello, Goodbye by Michael W. Smith... Where’s the navigator of your destiny Where is the dealer of this hand Who can explain Life and its brevity ‘Cause there is nothing here That I can understand You and I Have barely met And I just don’t want to let go of you yet… Noah, sweet child of mine I’ll see you on the other side And so I hold your tiny hand in mine For the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face Heaven calls for you Before it calls for me When you get there save me a place A place where I can share your smile And I can hold you for more than just awhile |

Pale Blue, by Toad the Wet Sprocket, off the "Bread and Circus" album I would want to have this played at my funeral, and should circumstances provide, would like to be listening to it when I die.
Azul palido As death it waits for me After storms And after pouring rain Vainest thunder Pale blue remains Azul palido As death it follows me Mocking weather An attempt in vain Weakest thunder Laughing at the rain Azul palido As death it comforts me After storms And after pouring rain Crashing thunder Pale blue remains |

The Johnny Cash version:
We'll meet again We'll meet again, Don't know where, Don't know when But I know we'll meet again some sunny day Keep smiling through, Just like you always do Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away So will you please say 'Hello' To the folks that I know Tell them I won't be long They'll be happy to know That as you saw me go I was singing this song We'll meet again, Don't know where, Don't know when But I know we'll meet again some sunny day |

MY WAY by Elvis P.
And now, the end is near; And so I face the final curtain. My friend, I’ll say it clear, I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain. I’ve lived a life that’s full. I’ve traveled each and ev’ry highway; And more, much more than this, I did it my way. Regrets, I’ve had a few; But then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do And saw it through without exemption. I planned each charted course; Each careful step along the byway, But more, much more than this, I did it my way. Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew When I bit off more than I could chew. But through it all, when there was doubt, I ate it up and spit it out. I faced it all and I stood tall; And did it my way. I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried. I’ve had my fill; my share of losing. And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing. To think I did all that; And may I say - not in a shy way, No, oh no not me, I did it my way. For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels; And not the words of one who kneels. The record shows I took the blows - And did it my way! |
