Remember pulling up to the gas pump and an attendent ran over, asked, "what'll it be?". And while the gas was pumping they checked your oil, radiator, washed the windsheild? And the gas was 25 cents a gallon... maybe 20 cents if there was a gas war going on...
Regular, Hi-Test or Ethyl... Fuck me.. I'm old..

| Lowest I remember gas was maybe $1.15 a gallon although I grew up in Long Island, NY so shit their is always more pricey. I do remember gas stations near me having self and full service. Here in Philly I don't think in the 10 years I've been here I have seen a full service station. When I goto NJ that's all they have. When I filled my motorcycle up there I always told them no, I'll fill it, lol. |

Is that a STD pancake?

Actually it disappeared here in central Texas by the time I was 12 or 13. There were a few stations that still offered full service, but at a premium. My mom always continued to use one until she stopped driving.
It was just something that was taken for granted, pull in to a gas station and that was the service. Another little nicety that's gone from the old Americana type experience. |

Don't they have that in the Nanny states still?
Population at large is too stupid to pump thier own gas without blowing up the planet? I can remember when the switch started. Self serve was new but cheaper, and the liberated broads were all bragging that they could pump thier own gas....even at full serve stations to make a point.

I always thought it was union bullshit |

Yes, I remember those days well. Every gas station kept a mechanic on duty and did repairs of all kinds. They sold tires, shocks, batteries, brakes, mufflers, lights, fuses, wipers, etc. Any aspiring motorhead or H.S. autoshop student could easily find a job as a mechanics helper/gas pumper. |

Is that a STD pancake? ![]() Looks like two of them actually. |
| When I was younger I can remember riding with my dad in his old Saab and hearing him complain that gas was up to $.78/gal. We would take family vacations every summer and occasionally small towns would have a full service station. I had to ask dad what that meant and he stopped at the next one to show me. That's the only time I've ever been to a full service station. |

That's how I got my start at getting paid to turn wrenches. Fuck, I feel old.

There are a very few full service gas stations left in MI. I guess I haven't seen them check under the hood... but one place still cleans with windshield.
Their gas prices are the same as everywhere else in that area too. They keep their overhead down by not having a big convenience store inside. |

"Will there be anything else......Mrs Nussbaum?".

We have a gas station in town that still is this way but off road diesel is self serve they will even air up your tires free (no purchase necessary) |

Yes. I remember .18 gas wars, full service. My ashtray was open and my friends put in pennies, nickels and pop bottles. I also remember being late for school one morning zooming into the station with only 20 cents to my name. I asked the attendant to please don't embarrass me by checking under the hood and the windshield was just fine. He just laughed. My ride, a 1964 Impala SS. 327, Hurst 4 speed. Aaaaaa the good ol days. |

A neighbor owned the local Union 76 station in my town.
It had three full service bays, a wash rack, and an oil change pit. The inside of the store was a mix between a small auto parts store and a beer / snacks / smokes store. He had 8 lanes with two pumps per lane, one side was full service, the other was self service. The two biggest things he had his full service employees do was to always ask the customer full tank and then pump it full to the brim, the other was to clean the windows with a squeegee and to wipe them down with a clean cloth. He sold the station in 1974, the new owners were not from "around here". Within 6 months the station became an ARCO station, the full service was gone, they turned one of the service bays into a cold storage room, they enlarged the store into an AM/PM mini-mart, filled in the oil change pit and paved it over. They also let all of the landscaping to to shit. |

I can remember as a kid, late 60's, gas being 18 - 20 cents. And my Dad would drive all the way across town to save 2 cents a gallon if there was a gas war going on.
First car I can remember was a gigantic Pontiac station wagon. Thing probably had a 30 gallon tank. And I can't recall Mom or Dad ever spending more than $10 at the pump. I was just starting to drive when gas hit $1. And none of the pumps could regulate that high a price, so they sold it by the half-gallon at 50 cents... lol |
|
When I started to drive gas was around .44 cents a gallon, by 1981 it was about a dollar and the pumps would only read to .99 cents.
I had a Monte Carlo back then that had a beefed up 454 with a 411 rear end that got 4 miles to a gallon in town and would pull 8 on the highway It sucked too I drove 20 miles one way to work.

| We have two full service gas stations around here. They don't charge any extra for the gas or service either. It's a small area and I don't know how much longer they'll be around, but it's nice to pull up at -10 and tell them to fill it up. They also always ask if you want your windshield washed or oil checked. |

"You can trust your car to the man who wears the Star, the big, bright Texaco STAR.." lol
They wore freaking pressed uniforms, tipped their caps, said "yes, sir.. yes, ma'am.." I know of a couple of stations here in town, there must be a few more, that still have a full-service lane but the gas is ~.30/gal more
