Can anyone recommend some simple to use video editing software that can handle MP4?

I believe you can get the proper codec online to allow use of windows movie editor in editing mp4 files

I'd highly encourage you to look at Sony Vegas Movie Studio. It's not free but for less than $100, it'll do everything you need for an amateur. The first 30 days are free if you download from Sony's site.
