Just got a netbook that I use for travel and as you can guess its primary use is for surfing the web and email.

It came preloaded with Outlook, which I really like. Unfortunately I have zero interest in paying for MS Office after the trial period just to get Outlook.

I'm used to Outlook, I like the notifications for new email, I love the calendar and it's functionality too. If I could keep it for free, it would be my first choice....but I think it goes tits-up after the trial is over.

What other options are there for similar programs that function similarly but are free? I Googled it, looks like Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular choice but I really don't want to play hit or miss until I find the right one.

Any suggestions?

Thunderbird is by far the best contender for Windows.

There are other open source alternatives like Sylpheed, but T-bird is the word for you, I believe.
