Even before the sunset of the AWB, people on this site (and elsewhere) began looking to the future. Many people said that we should set our sights on repealing the 1986 Machine Gun ban, others said that we should go after the 1989 Import Ban. While I agree that both of these bans are horrid infringements on our RKBA, I think that we have a more important law to repeal and it is not directly related to RKBA.
What should be our focus? McCain/Feingold! I think that the most important lesson I have learned during this election is the value of free speech, and that we must restore our freedom of speech. Look at the 2000 election. Who did not see the NRA's "infromercial" about the gun bans in England, Australia and Kalifornia? I saw it at least a dozen times. It was a powerful warning, and every political pundit will tell you that the NRA is responsible for George W Bush getting elected!
But this election, there has been virtually no message from the NRA or the GOA or any other RKBA group (at least not nationally). Why? Because the infomercial that the NRA ran during the 2000 election is now a violation of Federal law. As a result, John Kerry has been able to throw on some camo, grab an O/U 12 Gauge and tell everyone that he is a hunter and outdoorsmen. The truly sad part is that so many people are not hearing the truth about John Kerry's record on guns, and therefore they are buying his Elmer Fudd image, lock, stock and barrel (pun intended).
The NRA is the largest special interest group in the nation. We have a powerful voice, and we have swayed elections. Now, our voice in the struggle to preserve our freedoms and even our sovergeinty (yes, the NRA is leading the charge against the UN) has be stiffeled by anti-gun politicians (yes, the RINO McCain is an ANTI!) who would hand over our sovergeinty and our rights.
I believe that if we cannot reverse McCain/Feingold, then our fight to preserve the Right to Keep and Bear Arms will be in serious jeapordy. Without being able to get our message out, we will be at the mercy of political image consultants who paint gun grabbers as outdoorsmen, hiding their diabolical anit-gun schemes!
So am I alone on this one or what?
