I looked into getting a FFL about ten years ago. I was looking to save myself money and not really run a guns store. That's why I never did it. I believe your required to sell so many guns a year to keep the FFL. My question is could you get a FFL just to do the paperwork?? With the cost of $25.00 per gun for transfers, a guy could go into business just to do transfers and nothing more. Would this be legal under current FFL laws?

Not an FFL, but yes. Profiting from the sale of guns, show profit, get your FFL.

It takes 15 minutes to a half hour to do paperwork, so you'd be looking at $50/hr for your time. Not bad.

Gunsmiths don't sell any guns and they get FFLs.

Not an FFL either but I seriously looked into it. The biggest hurdle for me was going to be having a "business" location. Where I live, I cannot operate a "business" out of my home so I was looking at having to lease properly zoned office space. That was the deal killer for me.

I know of a few local guys that run their FFL business out of their house. For the paperwork and the liability, you would have to be buying or selling a lot of weapons annually to make it worth your time.

Yes, and it is my future (side) business model.  Transfers only, branch out into gunsmithing later

I am an FFL.    you will have to make sure that you home can be zoned to operate a business.   If you are in a residential subdivision that likely will not happen, but something to check into.

Regarding saving a little money on guns.   Right now you can buy guns on gunbroker or Bud's for less than my wholesale cost, so you won't be saving very much and you open yourself to ATF inspections of your home.

That was something I was looking at 10 + years ago. I was just wondering if a guy could use an FFL and be a transfers only business, or if would be closed down for some reason.

There are quite a few transfer only FFLs in my area and they do a good business.

Yes, you could do transfers only.  It's a part of the firearms business.

Yes you can do that.  When transfers go well then take 20-30 minutes.  When one doesn't it can take hours to resolve.

You're not required to sell so many guns in order to keep your FFL.

However, in order to comply with local laws, you will need to make sure your zoning(if applicable) is correct and you will also have to obtain local/state business tax licenses, etc. Trust me, they will find you if you don't.

Long story short, by the time you pay for all the licenses and factor in your time on paperwork, etc., there ain't much money to be saved.........
