Not the most productive day fishing, but I finished up well.

Gave me a run for my money; headed upstream and tucked in under a big undercut boulder.  Thought he was gone, maybe snagged the dropper fly, because there wasn't any life in the line.  So I let the line go slack and waded up abreast of the rock.  Took the slack up and there he was.  And so he bolted out the other side.  Took a bunch more line as he turned and headed downstream (while stringing me around a 2nd boulder).  I'm amazed the 5x tipped held, and he didn't manage to snag the other fly on something (one of the downsides of having more than one fly on the line).

I also managed to stay dry in pocket water that's waist deep on average.

Looks a little undercooked.

Good fish. Remember, a productive day fishing is not about how many fish you catch, how many bites you receive, or how many fish you see. It is about relaxing and enjoying nature.

That's a nice fish. Your other threat got my excitement going and I planned a trip to Buena Vista, CO in August. Can't wait to catch those brookies.

You caught us a delicious bass!

Seriously nice brownie.

What was your fly combo and tippet or leader material?

In for more gear info and river.

Water was lower today than in this pic, but I was up closer to the two big boulders on the bank in the center.

Sounds about right.

That is a nice looking trout either way..

My favorite spots in Colorado are all real tough to fish right now.  With all the rain everything is moving real fast and high.

Still, having bugs on the water is better than not.

#14 hare's ear and a #14 prince nymph dropper.  He hit the prince.  I tie it with fire orange thread, which usually picks up hatchery fish and little guys by the score.  Rainbows too.  Not often big browns though.

I normally fish the red spool Rio stuff, but I ran out earlier in the day.

Nice classic combo. I've never caught many browns in pocket water, but the rainbows charge out recklessly.
That water looks like the Housatonic here in NW CT. Lots of stone flies now, cahills soon. I'm almost totally a double nymph guy and been trying to learn streamer fishing lately.

Usually a 4-6 bead head weighted golden stone with a 20 prince or zugbug.

Thanks for the pics. Your river looks beautiful!

I do.  About a half inch of that orange fly line that you pull the core out of and thread the leader through.  It's normally 18-24" above the dropper.    I've gotten away from beadheads.  I put splitshot about 5-6" above the point fly and add/remove frequently to get to the drift I want.

I've fished the Housatonic a lot, but not in the past year or two.  Water level there is tough to catch on my available days.  I was on the next river over, at the top of the st. forest there.

Overcooked 8/10

I think next weekend might be a good weekend to see if the Salmon are bitin yet. If not, walleye it is. Had a good trout season this year. Lots of 16-20" ears that were delicious.

Here's ours.

Went to Northern AZ this weekend. My step-son caught his first trout. A 19" cutthroat. Going to be hard to top that one for a first. Fishing was slow overall but the kids had fun.

My brother caught this the other night-estimated its weight at 75 pounds, released it. One in a million catch-he actually managed to mouth hook it. Fishing for flathead catfish with a bluegill for bait. All we can think is the paddlefish was swimming by and just happened to have its mouth open as it passed his bait.
