MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (AP) ― A suburban St. Louis firefighter was shot to death Monday and two other emergency workers were injured in a standoff with a gunman.

The incident began with a report of a pickup truck fire Monday morning in Maplewood, just southwest of St. Louis. When firefighters arrived, someone began firing shots. Police responded, and at least one officer was also reportedly struck.

St. Mary's Hospital spokesman Eric Clark says a firefighter/paramedic from Maplewood was killed.

A Maplewood police officer was also taken to the hospital and was being treated for a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. Clark says his injury is not considered life-threatening.

The third injured emergency worker was taken to another hospital. There was no word on the worker's condition.

Damn.

Who expects to get shot at a car fire?

Another sad reminder... take nothing for granted. There's no such thing as a "routine" call.

Wild conjecture: The shooter torched his car that was about to be repossesed and didn't want anyone getting in the way of his insurance check.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man with a knife who stole an officer's patrol car and crashed it into other police cars late Sunday night was shot and killed by police, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Rick Graham.

Graham said the car thief tried to stab the other officers with a large knife. Two officers opened fire on the suspect, killing him, Graham said.

Not totally the same type of story but just it's just one more case where criminals don't give a fuck and will attack officers.

To this day, I still use a lot of the training that I got on the cops... and that was 15 years ago.

One way to tell which firefighters are ex-cops: look for the guys that never stand in front of the door that they're knocking on.

That's how it works.

There's a lot of evil MFers out there who will kill you for absolutely nothing. Setting a car fire to get some FD people there just to play shooting gallery isn't beyond the capability of a startling number of our fellow Americans.

As I recently read in a novel:
Americans don't really believe that evil exists.

Or who stop just before entering on a rescue call and just listen for a second or two.

Never been PD, or even had training with them, but thank goodness I had some good EMS instructors eons ago who taught those exact tactics.

Tragic.

I need to call my hubby... he's at the station today.

During our riots in 1975, our firemen were getting shot at when responding to fires on one particular side of the city.  We then started escorting them in and stayed  with them on the calls.
