I don't know how to explain it. One would think after the many cigars I have smoked I would know this.

The final third of most of my cigars gets a like a not a mint but a heat like flavor. Its slightly harsh.

Could it be a hotter smoke since the smoke is not traveling as much through the cigar.

How do I prevent that? And prevent the cigar from tunneling that last bit?

Are you a fast cigar smoker?  Maybe take a little longer between puffs, and smaller puffs?

This, best advice I was given when I first started smoking was enjoy some nice music or conversation while smoking. It will force you to slow down and enjoy it, thus the final third will be much more enjoyable. If you're smoking in the cold try a bigger ring guage to dissipate the heat a little more.

The last bit of mine always tastes like old eggs. It always happens down towards the band

Smoking slower and taking shorter draws should help you.

I too suffer from smoking too fast and I've used a timer to slow down, seemed to help the flavors.

This is where it gets interesting.

I usually take over a hour to smoke. Sometimes its too slow, and I end up with it tunneling because I havent puffed in a while. (I have to re-light sometimes)

But if I try to speed up a bit I end up with the harshness I am referring too.

I am thinking along the line of djsmiles, I am taking to big of puffs.

Do you purge the smoke?

After I ash, instead of inhaling, I gently blow out through the cigar.  It helps get rid of some stale smoke, helps keep an even burn, and helps prevent tar build up.

ETA... also for future reference you will tend to get more tar buildup when using a punch on larger ring smokes instead of a full cut.  Some folks carry those key ring punches around for quick use.  Most don't realize that small hole traps a lot of tar.  I used to make a playing card "club" type hole on some smokes when only having a punch handy.

Agreed. I hardly ever punch unless my cutter can't cut the cigar. Even then I may fingernail it and pull the cap off.

I didn't know this, but I occasionally get tar build up when I use a V cut too.

Passing along wisdom from some old school smokers from another forum.  I learned of this a while ago while trying to figure out how to keep my burn even.  It also helps the flavor.
