My wife and I were talking about trying out fencing. I have a little background with kenjitsu and iado and like sword play.

The reason for fencing is that we.'ll be on a level playing field. My size and strength wont be a huge factor.

Who here has experience with it? Any recommendations? Id like to do Saber but dont really care. There is a place in providence that has decent prices.

Hopefully I can fit it in with lifting, running, shooting, and nursing school

I did just a semester way back in my sophomore year of college. That was over 20 years ago, though, and we only used foil. One classmate got very good at whipping the tip to sting opponents' knuckles as he lunged. I was not that skilled.

The instructor was also a ballet dancer, and her class warm-up consisted of 30 minutes of sadistic cardio and "humans don't bend that way" stretches. I loved the class and finished somewhere in the top 1/3 of the class at the year-end match. The Y where my kids take swimming lessons looks like it has some amateur fencing classes or a league. I've been tempted to sign up there to do a little fencing & climbing.

In my youth I was a very competitive fencer.

I mainly did foil and epee. Sabre is kind of cool, but not as interesting as the other two disciplines IMO.

Foil is the classic, and most common. Learn foil first, compete in tournaments, then branch out into epee or sabre if you wish.

Foil is more about precision, finesse, speed, and outwitting your opponent, whereas sabre relies on much more pure speed and strength.

Nice girls don't do sabre.
