Just kinda board while downloading some music for a CD and got to thinking about especially cool battle scenes from movies.
Somewhere in my top ten would be: Blackhawk Down- the whole night sequence with the Little Birds doing their runs. (Granted the whole movie was a great battle sequence) Star Trek II- when Enterprise makes her run for the nebula and the music comes up to the crew prepping for battle. Zulu- the final battle when the tired and beaten 24th begins singing "Men of Harlech" as they open up on the charging Impe, expecting to be wiped out (that scene puts into pictures my concept of courage, honor, and valor) Star Wars: Jedi. When Akbar moves the Rebel Fleet in on the Imperial ships. Some of the broadside sequences are very cool, although the best part was when the crippled A-Wing pilot rams the bridge on the SSD and send it into the second Deathstar. Saving Private Ryan- About the last half hour. Not much more to say. Lawerance of Arabia- The cavalry charge on Akaba. I'm quite sure there are more. I havnt seen Patriot enough to recall, but I remember some very good scenes in there. I also loved the cinematography in Thin Red Line, and could make it a nice, short, entertaining movie if I cut out all the weird introspective and artsey scenes. |

The Longest Day - The assualt on the Ouestram? Casino. Apocalypse Now - Air Cav assualt with Flight of the Valkyries soundtrack. S-I |
The Matrix - When Neo walks through the metal detector.....until the helicopter crashes into the building.
If you don't have a 5.1 or better surround sound system you will fall in love with your battle scenes all over again when you do. |
Full Metal Jacket - when the Marines are being interviewed while they are assaulting Hue City.
funny as hell... |
Duuuh, bank robbery scene in Heat.
The FIRST 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. The forest scene in The Patriot (where Mel kills the Red Coats with his knife with fire support from the kid). The battle scenes in Road Warrior (can't remember any specific one but many were cool). The lightsaber duel between Luke and Vader in Empire. The opening battle in Gladiator. Pretty much all of Braveheart. |

I've got a Veledyne(sp?)sub with a 15 inch cone and 150 watts. My neighbors hate me. [:D] |

Dr. Strangelove - when the Army (including Col. Bat Guano) invade Burpleson AFB. Shot in a "documentary" style by Kubrick, it is very convincing.
Battles of Falkirk and Sterling from 'Braveheart' without a doubt. there are plenty of others but, those two battle scenes are unforgettable.
Blackhawk Down: The gunfight with the Delta Snipers Shugart and Gordon fighting to protect Micheal Durant.Always brings a tear to my eyes because they knew it was a hopless situation and they still requested to be dropped in.
Skullboy. |
Only one mention of the foiled bank robber scene in Heat? Maybe some of you haven't seen it. The rest of the movie is OK, but the shootout takes the cake!
what most of them say!
and damn, get the 5.1 system if you can.. It rocks. I especially LOVE the x.1 (subwoofer), it helps bring 'life' to a movie [:D] I got a new dvd player a couple weeks ago, it does all the standard audio (-THX) but that DTS ROCKS! it does more and it cost 80% less than my original DVD player in 1998! |
First 30 and last 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.
All of Blackhawk Down. The Battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers. Most of We Were Soldiers. |
I really dug the rescue scene in "Proof of Life" with Russel Crow.
I'd have to say the battle in the beginning of Gladiator. I've always been fascinated by the Romans.
Also gotta mention the first 20 minutes or so of Saving Private Ryan.. Makes me feel pretty damn helpless sitting on the couch and watching all those brave American boys being gunned down on the beach... We Were Soldiers- every fighting second in that movie was very good, I thought. As was Black Hawk Down. Can't forget to mention Braveheart... That was extremely intense.. |
My all time favorites are those that include medieval battles. Sure a modern soldier can pick off an enemy at 100 yards, but It took a Real man to go running into a crowd of enemy soldiers armed with only a meat cleaver. With that said I'd pick
#1 Braveheart #2 The Battle scenes in Lord of the Ring "The Two Towers" I also Love the Revolutionary War Movie The Patriot. and pretty much any WW2 movie[^] |
Quoted: My current favorite: Blade 2 - Battle scene in the night club View Quote John, Are you NOT aware of the fact that Snipes did one of the most anti-gun made for cable movies of ALL TIME recently? That p.o.s. "Liberty Stands Still" Completely preposterous and anti-gun, not to mention anti AR15! I will NEVER watch nor go to anything that fucker stars in or has anything to do with... OF course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong..... We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers are my faves |
Pretty much what everyone else has said. But remember the Casino scene in 10000 Miles to Graceland. Gotta love that M16 with the Beta mag [:D] If you haven't seen that movie it's a must see, if not for the whole movie just for that scene
If you want some good Civil War battle action check out Ride With the Devil . Lots of scenes of guys trying to reload cap and ball revolvers on the run, that sort of thing.
The nightclub gunfight in Terminator, followed by the car-chase/shotgun shootout.
Just watched 13th Warrior last night on SciFi... brutal fight scenes in that one. |
Most all of the battle scenes in Gettysburg. The amazing bravery of the men on both sides and the stupidity of the tactics of the time.
The air to air scenes in most WWII movies (Battle of Briton and Memphis Belle esp.)The Blue Max, Flight of the Intruder and yes, even Top Gun. While not a movie, a scene from the TV show Soldier of Fortune where a five man team clears a stairwell in a palace. Driving drum beat soundtrack in the background and the tatics just looked right. The night ambush at the end of Platoon. One more....the look on the German soldiers face when he looks out of the bunker and sees the entire D-Day landing force in The Longest Day. |
The whole movie "Cross of Iron"
The tractor factory fight in "Stalingrad" The attack on the firebase in "The Green Berets" All of "Saving Private Ryan" The battle of Helms Deep in "The Two Towers" plus too many more to mention |
Band of Brothers -
Lt. Spears charges in to relieve Lt. Dike at Foy and runs through German lines...twice. Very cool episode. |

Or hate everyone who has portrayed Stalin? Quite possibly the closest thing to evil the world has ever seen? Snipes is an actor. He acts. It's a movie. Not reality. You get my drift. |

HEAT
WAY of the GUN 13th WARRIOR, Bulwi's last battle Aliens ( let's ROOOOOCCCCKKKKKK !!!! ) because everything that can go wrong...does go wrong. |
"Ride Of The Valkyries" Apocaclypse Now..whole scene from the 'mount up/bugle' to the Thuds dropping nap
Crossing the Volga: Enemy At The gates..Stukas, M1910 watercooled Maxims, PpSh41s, every other Russian draftee getting a rifle & the others expected to grab one from the dead. D-Day & the last battle in Saving Private Ryan. Black Hawk Down, 'nuff said Romans vs german barbarians- Gladiator First fight in the Collisium-Gladiator Battle Of Helms Deep-LOTR Two Towers..Legolas surfing down the stairs on a shield, pincushioning orcs along the way. Boromir vs the Orcs LOTR-Fellowship Of The Ring...shades of Spartans at Thermopalae 13th Warrior-final battle where the Viking leader gets up from his deathbead to lead the fight & dies afterward Darth Maul vs Qui Gon & Obi Wan lightsaber dual SW:Phantom Menace Jango Fett Vs Obi Wan SW:Attack Of The Clones Fett has more tricks up his sleeve than Felix the Cat Conan The Barbarian..the battle in the ruins, esp Valeria with the posthumous assist. Some else mentioned the rescue scene in Proof Of Life..I agree, damn good & realistic. Same for the bank robbery in Heat. |

I'm going to get the DVD of it when I get around to it. Oh, and as for Jewel, I'd definitely hit that too. [sex] Bit of trivia, Ride with the Devil was directed by Ang Lee, who also directed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. |

My top 5:
#1: All battle scenes of Saving Private Ryan #2: All battle scenes of Band of Brothers #3: All battle scenes of Blackhawk Down #4: Bank robbery scene in Heat #5: All battle scenes of Platoon |

Top 5 picks:
Black Hawk Down Braveheart We Were Soldiers The Patriot Saving Private Ryan |

I always liked the battle scene between Indiana Jones and the dude with the scimitar. [:D]
Short but decisive. Never bring a knife to a gun fight. Seriously though, Carentan from Band of Brothers is one of the most realistic. I loved it. I was sitting there with M1 wanting to jump into the screen. |
I watched Ron Maxwell's 1993 movie of Gettysburg (called: "Gettysburg") about 2 months ago and was blown away by many of the battle scenes in it.
Quoted: U571 gets mentioned, but not "Das Boot?" View Quote I have the Director's Cut of "Das Boot." It is pretty good, but the gun battle in U571 more easily comes to mind. |
Pretty much everything has been covered, but no one mentioned "The Last of the Mohicans".
I love the main battle scene, the surrender ambush, and the final scene. Great stuff. |

View Quote I was wondering if someon would mention that. If you like those sequences, check out the director's cut on DVD. There's an entire night battle sequence where they send Major Heyward with a company of grenadiers out of Wm. Henry at night to do a diversionary assault, so the runners gan get away (this was the part where Hawkeye provided cover while they ran) They even show one of the grenadiers using an authentic 18th century flintlock grenade launcher! Awesome! If you've never seen one, there's one on display at Ft. Ticonderoga in NY. Another cool part of the sequence it that they hold their ground until the french and savages are right on top of them before letting loose a volley. Then they Wheel right and fire another into a group of Frenchmen. unfortunately they did not edit out the tour bus in the surrender scene.[:(!] |

Read G&G a while ago, great book. Are they realy doing a movie?

All battle scenes in "Band of Brothers". I watched the whole thing non-stop on Christmas day.
The final battle in the "Wild Bunch" The night battle in "Patton" The opening battle in "Gladiator" The first and last 1/2 hr "Saving Pvt Ryan" Saving the son in "Patriot" loved aim small, miss small and the tomahawk work. Tank battles in "The Battle of the Buldge". The siege in "Last of the Mohicans". |
Anything from a Star Wars movie
All of Braveheart The final battle in Glory Last of the Mohicans D-Day in Saving Private Ryan Helms Deep from Two Towers rocked, but the editors mangled it. The Rumble in Outsiders was kinda cool too :) |
Yup, most of these are pretty good choices, but the last battle scene of The Seven Samurai is probably still my favorite. My only bitch with Kurosawa is that he refrained from using blood in his movies.
