I am using I7 920 w/ 12 Gigs of RAM, ATI 5770 GPU. I can start the game but it crashes every time before I can choose whether I am a boy or girl. I downloaded it from Steam about 2 weeks ago and can't get any support from anyone including the author.

What can I do to make it work?

First I would try to get in and reset the video and sound settings to low and see if you can get further.(You shouldn't have to with that videocard but stupider things have happened).

If that does nothing I would change my video and possibly my audio drivers. Either update to the newest Catalyst, roll back to a previous Catalyst or install the Omega drivers.

If you tried those things already with no luck I'm not sure. Do other newish games work on the computer?

The computer is brand new. This is the first game I tried.

Forgot to add, OS is Win 7 x64.

I seriously doubt thats the issue. I've been running 64bit for 2 yrs now Vista and then 7. All newer games have worked with no issues. With that said, there was occasionally a nvidia 64bit driver issue with I think 2 versions, so in total 2 problems I had but remedied with a simple google.

Try either going up a driver version or down a driver version on your card. 2nd try XP sp3 compatibility mode, and thirdly get a legit copy of the game

No, it's fresh. I installed it and that's it.

Fallout 3 doesn't play well with quad-core processors.

This fixed it for me.

Good luck –– I'd hate to tally up all the hours I've burned through playing this game.

I just did that fix and played for a few hours with no issues
I still think my main issue is all the mods I have going as I played pre-mod with almost no crashes. But maybe the combination of having a quad core and the mods was the tipping point
