| Just started playing this game im out of the vault and have been running around the wastelands and been through the first city and made my way to the minefield but what the hell do i have to do to get a decent gun?? i have been beating the shit out of everything with a baseball bat because those little pistols are fucking worthless. I tried to sneak up and stab some guy from behind in the town with the atom bomb but he ran off and came back with half the fucking town and they killed me.... can anyone tell me how i can get some money and buy a good weapon please!! |

The AK is actually one of the best guns (Chinese Assault Rifle) if you're working with Small Guns. A lot of Raiders have them, you don't need to start killing people at Megaton. Here's a little hint: ammo doesn't weigh anything so unless you NEVER use that weapon system, don't sell off ammo. Ever. IMO, the 10mm pistol is good for most things, especially humans, that you'll fight early in the game as long as you use VATS. The Chinese Assault Rifle works pretty well on everything that isn't wearing power armor. |

I think part of the early game is wondering around naked with no ammo and few guns. It is a pain at times, but I thought it really helped immerse you in TEOTWAWKI scenario. I remeber always feeling like i was scavenging for every round because I wasn't sure if I'd have enough for the next encounter.
I started a new game about 3 weeks ago and I have been playing on and off. I have done most of the side quests and I'm almost done with the main quest and I've got >1000 rounds for each weapon I use regularly (Lincoln's Repeater, Reservist's Rifle, Blackhawk, Xuanlong Assault Rifle). You just have to keep at it. Try switching out what weapons you use instead of depleating one kind of ammo at a time. With the raiders and mutants later on you get all kinds of 5.56. I think I have >2000 of that. |

I never bought a weapon.. got everything from killing folks and taking what they had. Are your skills based around melee, or guns? Because the basic 10mm pistol served me well for quite awhile. Do you use VATS? i based them more around melee because all i have is that fucking bat, the 10 mm doesnt really do shit for me right now i think it has like 5 damage or something. How do you use VATS? |

I spent about a year of gametime wandering around the wastelands leveling up and getting weapons. There are a few spots where there are always raiders and once you get strong enough to easily kill them you can use that as a source for weapons. do you get stronger just by leveling up and using the points the give you? |
|
if you have already made Megaton an enemy city, you may as well restart and put your points in right the first time. I stuck to small arms and did pretty well.goto the supermarket for the quest from Moira and you should have ample ammo after if you don't fuck it up. |

And it's pretty f-ing cool. By the way, there are about 1,000 places to get the AK. It's not worth pissing off Megaton. Do the quests, then handle Megaton as you see fit. Wink wink, nudge nudge. |

If you get to Minefield, defeat Arkansas and you'll get the sniper rifle. In some of the homes in Minefield you'll find some weapons and ammo. They can come in handy. North of Minefield is MDPL-13 Power Station. North of the power station is the Alien crash site. There you'll find the alien blaster and the ability to kick ass as necessary. Careful though, it degrades quickly and ammo is scarce, as in only ~250 rounds total until you get the expansions installed. ETA: Also note, as weapons worsen in condition so does the damage they cause. ETA2: The perks you want early on are Comprehension, which grants you two points instead of one when you read skill books; Educated, to grant you additional skill points every time you level up; and Intense Training, to improve your SPECIAL attributes, but don't go crazy with Intense Training. Use it every once and awhile. Fortune Finder and Scrounger are good ones to have too; with the former, you find much more caps in containers than you normally would and the latter does the same but with ammo. |

I have already killed Arkansas and took his rifle but i dont really like it all that much i got attacked by some dogs and blasted one with it but it kept coming and i had to resort to the bat. I will have to check out the crash site and get the blaster... i there an expansion to download? |

Quoted: I will have to check out the crash site and get the blaster... i there an expansion to download? Are you on Xbox360? I don't think the expansions are available for the PS3 yet. But on XBox, do Operation: Anchorage sooner rather than later. You get tons of goodies as a reward for completion. Go there with as empty an inventory as possible so you can maximize your bring backs. |
| First of all, I would stop assigning kill points to melee right now! That will screw you later on in the game. I would get your small guns up as quick as possible, that will make traditional firearms more powerful and you will finally be able to aim better than Diane Feinstein. Some of the misses I had at near point blank range at the start of this game were so ridiculous and over the top that I almost wanted to quit playing (but I am glad I didn't). I'm like come on.. NO ONE is THAT BAD of a shot. Search alien blaster on google to find it's location exactly, It's near minefield... One of the best guns in the game, but ammo is very limited so only use it when you really get in jams. Also, I would recommend the animal friend perk, if you get that, dogs, those nasty yao gaui (or whatever bears) won't attack you anymore unless you shoot them first. |

How do you use VATS? Not sure what you're playing it on, so I can't get specific.. but VATS is a great help. I rarely engage an enemy without it. You can shoot things in the legs to slow them down, the arms to make them unable to use their weapons..head shots blind and kill.. it's great. I'm specialized in small weapons, and can kill even things like supermutants with a single shot to the head via VATS. If you're on 360, VATS is the right shoulder button...I think. |

You should have gotten the 10MM pistol before you even left the vault.
Slightly off topic but you will find dead Knights of Steel in the wasteland, they are wearing Power Armor, this is the good stuff! But you will need special training to use it. You can get training as part of a quest later in the game,OR, you can use a glitch to get training at the very beginning! Here is the link to the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYHz3zeKFP8 You only have to follow the last part of the video, from going up the overpass onwards. I have tried it on the PS3 version and it does work. |
|
I beat most of the game sneaking around and using Ol' Painless.
The wiki has a ton of good info, http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3 |

Gauss rifle from oeration anchorage, terrible shotgun, cant remember the name of the heavy hitter sniper rifle and the chinese assualt rifle.
I have already got all the achievements for game and DLC. If you need any help with the game, check out: http://www.xbox360achievements.org and type in Fallout 3 into the search bar. Then click on GUIDE in the top section. There is a complete walkthrough of the entire game and it shows you how to get every achievement. GUIDE Forums for anything you get stuck on |
| I started playing the game a couple of weeks ago, and really had trouble getting in to the "wandering around" mindset. I'm accustomed to straight shooter games (ala Resistance and Resistance 2), so this game is a big change. Plus, its frustrating to use the weapons and have very little happen. At first, all I wanted to do is blow up Megaton, but couldn't make it to the tower without getting killed. It definitely takes a different mentality to play the game, and I may pick it back up later on. |

You get a basic hunting rifle pretty early in the game, but you are going to have to use VATS a lot until you get decent weapons and armor. Once you are better equipped, get yourself an Ol' Painless –– I think someone at Bethesda has an arfcom account Yeah i am going to have to figure out how to use the VATs system soon and get better weapons i want to be able to shoot stuff and using the damn bat is pissing me off |

dont even waste your time with the VATS until further into the game. Spend ALOT of time wandering around findng locations and engaging all the wasteland critters to boost your levels. Finding all tons of locations will pay off later in the game.
Go find the alien blaster and have it handy for when you engage the super mutants. Other than that, dont waste its ammo, it is in VERY short supply. Worse than trying to find AR15 ammo at wally world. DO NOT DRINK THE NUKA-COLA QUANTUM. They look all pretty and purple and shiney but you will need them for an achievement. Stimpacks and Rad-away are your friend. I found everything else about useless. Save at levels 7, 13, 19 and 29. I saved right before I leveled up and stayed pretty much neutral. This way you can reload the save and go for the good and bad achievements. Once you get the neutral ach., go into megaton and start slaughtering everyone. Kill 8 or 9 people and check your stats. leave the area and it will level you up for the evil achievement. MAKE SURE when you find "Canterbury commons" and do the quest there, HAVE ALOT OF CASH on you. You will be given the option to invest in the wandering traders. DO SO. This will give them a much higher repair level to fix your more powerful unique weapons and they will give you better deals. Best place to catch them is at "Rivet City". If one isnt there, wait 24 hours and a new one will show up. Turn the home given to you in Megaton into a stash house for weapons and armor. Its a good place to go back to and repair stuff and keep things to sell. down side is that the chick in the general store is a tightwad and wont give you much for anything. Wandering traders are a good way to go. Dont waste your bobby pins. they arent in that much of a shortage, but are hard to locate. Like metioned before, do "operation anchorage" first to get some good armor and good weapons right out of the gate. "the pit" DLC doesnt produce much in the way of anything but is fun. "broken steel" will net you a shit ton of heavy firepower. The Tesla cannon is flat brutal. EXPLORE, EXPLORE, EXPLORE. There are a ton of interesting things to find throughout the game. |

I just started over on Very Hard and this is my recommendation:
bobbleheads world map Get the Perception bobblehead before anything else. While in the Republic of Dave getting the P Bobblehead, pick up Ol' Painless (either by killing Dave or swiping his key - it's in the safe next to his desk). There is also an "AK" and an officer's sword hanging on the wall in the Museum there, near the bobblehead. The sword is actually fairly good early in the game for dicing dogs and ROUS's. If you are going bad karma, kill everyone in town 'cept the kids and reap their weapons and ammo. Dog eat dog ya know?
ETA fixed map link. |

damn this is going to take a long time... You can burn through the game sticking to the main quest and ignoring everything else but IMHO it take alot away from the game. With all of the DLC that is out (Operation anchorage, the pit, broken steel) and what is coming on June 23 (point look) and then the mothership zeta coming shortly after that (the aliens come back for thier blaster and you get taken onto the ship) you will EASILY get a couple hundred hours out of this game. I am also an achievement point whore, so i sunk alot of time into making sure I got all of them. just shy of a 40,000 gamer score right now. ETA: GET THE DLC! Its only 10.00 a pop and worth it. You can get it in the market place in game content. |
|
Also almost forgot, go to the Minefield early on and use it when you need to regain health, much easier than getting a luxury apartment! Just fast travel to the minefield, go in the first house on the left, and rest in the bed upstairs to pass time or gain health. |
|
I'd say I have 100+ hours in the game easy and haven't found or explored everything yet. I don't have the experimental MIRV yet but all the other unique weapons. Oddly enough even though I have all manner of heavy weapons I still like using Ol' Painless or Lincoln's repeater. The Repeater just makes things too dang easy though, even at late stages in the game I can kill most enemies easily with it (stealth crits FTW)
Oh and if you need info about the game, go no further than here: Fallout Wiki |

START OVER!! if Megaton is pissed at you might as well restart, there are a LOT of side missions and XP that stem from that town, once you are done with them you can decide to level it with the nuke or leave it in peace, depends how you like your Karma to roll Nonsense. Just leave for about a day or so and come back. Worked for me. Before I detonated the nuke anyway. Put points into "small guns" to improve the effectiveness of shooting, and take the "gun nut" perk to boost it further. You can take this perk three times, btw. Besides that, it just takes some time to level up and get those stats up from starting position. And like another poster mentioned, VATS is your friend. |

Lot's of killing and scavaging. Don't attack towns (megaton, rivet city, paradise falls, etc.), you need to trade with them.
I bought the Prima game guide. That giant fold out map helps a lot. I have already gotten through the game and now I'm going back to look for things I missed and chase down alternate story lines. It's a great game that you won't get bored of for a long time. |
