I love the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, the tips of the rotors travel at about 500 MPH, the gear reduction from the T55 turbines goes from 15,066 RPM through 5 transmissions down to 225 RPM at the rotors. During an evacutation in Vietnam one lifted off with 126 people on board. The load master was interviewed and said he packed them in like sardines then the pilot throttled up and raised the collective and he (crewman) started throwing people off till they lifted off.

Lets hear some fun facts from stuff you're interested in.

There has only ever been ONE submarine sunk by another submarine while both subs were submerged and the sinking was intentional.

It was done with unguided torpedoes.

They now wish the had not sunk it. (Was carrying 60 tons of mercury)

So all those epic underwater sub battles we love to watch in movies and read about in naval fiction.. Once...

CH-47 inaction!

When I went to Boeing in Philadelphia they were making foreign CH-47s on the assembly line at the time, so all the Americans had to be cleared by the foreigners to get in.    I did get a personal tour of the V-22 fuselage assembly line though!

The USS Enterprise was the only naval ship ever to have 8 reactors. She also had 4 rudders which was 2 more than other carriers.

She also led the last major naval battle of the 20th century during Operation Preying Mantis in which we attacked Iran in retaliation for USS Samuel B. Roberts striking a mine and attacking commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf.

I did this for my 5000th post.

My company does a lot of work for the fed reserve in NYC. They have a display of all the oddball bank notes from the past. Pretty cool.

The $5,000 bill featured James Madison on the obverse. There is a large-sized $5,000 Federal Reserve Note on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The $5,000 bill was printed as a gold certificate in 1928, and a federal reserve note in 1928, 1934, and 1934A. As of May 30, 2009, 342 $5,000 bills were known to exist

Human hair is around 3 thousandths of an inch thick in diameter.

Did you kids know that we could actually end global warming in 5 years, if we raise taxes on the super rich by 2%?

The CH-47 blades do not always move at the same speed.  In forward flight, the blades on one side will be moving up to 140 mph faster than the other...  (Airspeed).

ETA.   The 'Whop, Whop" sound is most often caused by the blade tip going supersonic.  More rotor blades turning at slower speeds provide the same lift without the noise (relatively speaking).

Dunno where you got that part, but is is not correct. I can't think of any helo blades that DO go supersonic, and certainly not CH-47's or any other "normal" helos.

The USS Iwo Jima LHD-7 was the last boiler fired ship to be built for the US Navy. She was commissioned in 2001. The two 600 PSI Babcock and Wilcox boilers produce 400 tons of steam per hour which is enough power to run 4 turbo fire pumps that move 8000 gallons per minute at 150 psi, 5 turbine generators producing 16 megawatts of electricity, and 2 triple expansion geared turbines driving the propellers at 77,000 shaft horsepower. All at the same time. At flank speed the boilers consume 2 gallons of Diesel Fuel Marine per second, and it's still nearly three times more efficient than the engine in your car.

When I was kid..... Many decades ago. It was Christmas morning. Santa brought me a G.I. Joe helicopter. A Huey. My father, who is russian and irish told me that the blades on top go "WOP WOP WOP" He then explained that the tail rotor goes " guinea, guinea, guinea. My mother who was Italian and german was not amused.....
True story.....
