Haven't they already started giving them out?  There will be a full-blown riot if they stop.  Or are the FEMA cards different than the Red Cross cards?

FEMA Scraps Debit Card Program
Friday, September 09, 2005

WASHINGTON — The nation's relief agency said Friday it will discontinue its program to distribute debit cards worth up to $2,000 to hurricane victims, two days after hastily announcing the novel plan to provide quick relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina (search).

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (search) said it will scrap the program once officials finish distributing cards this weekend at shelters in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, where many of the evacuees were moved. No cards will be issued to victims in other states.

Hurricane victims at other locations will have to apply for expedited aid through the agency's traditional route — filling out information on FEMA's Web site to receive direct bank deposits, FEMA spokeswoman Natalie Rule said.

"We tried it as an innovative way to get aid to evacuee populations in Texas. We decided it would be more expeditious with direct deposits," she said, citing the large staffing operation that would be required to replicate the Texas operation in other states.

Christ, they are gonna do direct deposits now??!!!

There will be no accountability of how the money will be spent, FUBU + cognac for everyone!!!

Then again, there was really no accountability with the debit card either.

You missed the gist of the AP story.

Unless the homies stole a laptop during the looting, how many of these refugees do you think have a computer, let alone Internet access???

Smart.  I love the idea!

They will be able to have a taxpayer funded .gov employee fill out the form on line for them, probably getting overtime and hazard pay while typing....
