Can a FAL be assembled at your dining room table like an AR, or does it require a professional? I've been looking for a new project for a while, I've put together over a dozen AR's for myself and others, I need something challenging.

The most difficult part of assembling a FAL is barreling the receiver.  Requires a few special tools, but is not really all that difficult.

never completely done an ar or a fal but other than headspacing and screwing the barrel into the action they are both pretty much easy to put together.

Any cost benefits to building one?

Any welding required?

No welding required, and there probably isn't any cost benefit.  Most builds sell for the sum value of the parts used.  If the builder has a well known reputation for quality, then you start paying some for the work done.

Easy as pie. I made it in my kitchen. Set the barrel with a pipe wrench and a wood block in the mag well. Only tool I really needed was lock shoulder gauge and then I re headspaced it. It also depends on the receiver you get, Century will take ALOT of fitting/tweaking.

Not like an AR just snapping an upper to a lower though.

Not really much harder than an AR.

But unless you have access to a barreled parts kits (damn you Clinton and Bush), it probably isnt worth it...

I've built and rebuilt a number of them (i've had five different barrels on my favorite receiver, for instance).
You will need a sturdy vise. If you are going to do several a good receiver wrench is useful, as are barrel blocks.
I've heard of people using wood for one time jobs, but I've never had luck with that.
Sadly the golden days of FAL building are well past us. Cheap .308 and Imbel receivers are gone.

The cost of recievers and kits has gone way up since the hey day of home FAL builds a few years ago.  You will need some specialized tools and knowledge that can be picked up on other sites.  Back in 2004 we did a group build in my garage.  We assembled 12 ( only had to order 2 locking shoulders) and every one of them runs great.  You wont break even on cost if you do one or two builds due to purchase price of the tools/accessories needed unless you already have them (which is unlikely) that only comes from scale of economy - many builds.
