My daughter has the worst chapped lips I have ever seen. Naturally we're 90 miles from a store. Is there any household remedies that I can do/make for her? Patty |

Okay this is a long shot, but do you have any Neutrogena hand lotion? If so, it's WAY better on chapped lips than anything else I've tried. I've also, in a desperate situation, used olive oil, of course vaseline (used frequently and works pretty good) and I HAVE used Vicks VapoRub, but it burns some. The petroleum jelly in it is what works. The menthol is not good, but when you're desperate, you do anything cuz chapped lips hurt. Any vegetable oil or Aloe Vera gel (don't eat this if you can help it) will be better than nothing. Chapped lips are like windburn, which is burn similar to sunburn in the way the skin needs help. That's why the aloe sometimes helps. Any skin emolient is better than nothing, even if it's Suave hand lotion and tastes like crap. Kitties |
Better than nothing, I agree. But Gosh almighty, some lipsticks dry my lips out. What are the lipstick makers thinking? Patty? What do you have in the house? Kitties, who would use veggie shortening rather than nothing. |

If your in the middle of nowhere and need to moisturize and protect your lips, you can take your finger and wipe the grease from the sides of your nose on the lips. It does in a pinch, better than nothing. ETA: Sorry didn't realize this was in the Women Shooters forum. |
I'm sorry! I don't have any vasoline.  I had her put avocado on them but it hasn't helped much. I'll give the other remedies a try!Okay, I have some triple antibiotic ointment. I have vitamin e [which I just had her put some on], I have hydrocromisome [ I can't spell] cream, hand cream and I'm trying to find some zinc oxide cream that I have.Patty |

Wait. A petroleum based product will be better than hydrocortisone. If that's what you were trying to spell. Choose vegetable shortening before you choose something medicated. KY jelly will not work. It won't help. Slippery but no "oil" component. What do you have? Lard? That would work. Would work well in fact, though I doubt you have it. The congealed fat from the beef/hamburger you roasted? I know it sounds gross, but it will work. The vitamin E is good. Mix the vitamin E with some vegetable shortening to make a paste that will STAY on her lips when she goes to sleep. That's the key. Getting it to stay on. Heck. BUTTER or even margarine will work. FAtty product to hold moisture on the skin. Kitties |
If you mush up the avocado with the vitamin E, this is a good remedy. IF you can get it to STAY on her lips. Avocado, vitamin E and veggie shortening. Hey, we could market this. ARFCOM lip saver.   Don't use the antibiotic ointment. It won't help, and you're not supposed to eat it. I am assuming you do not have an aloe vera plant? |
How does one get the grease out of one's U-joints? No bacon in my house! I'm trying the vitamin e & avocado. No Alea Vera |

Patty, that should work except it needs some kind of emolient to keep it on her skin. I know you have some butter/margarine/shortening or something like that, something safe and edible--in the house. Tryin to think of what else falls into those categories. BTW: Cucumber is very cooling if you want to mush some of that up in the mix, but it won't help it cling to the skin. Kitties |

If your U-joints are leaking, you'll see the grease. May not be much, and it might be covered with dust, but I say "GO FOR IT"! Check also any other place on your vehicle that might have petroleum. Hell, oil from the end of the dipstick might be temporary fix, at least to keep her from licking her lips. |

Patty..Not much on the home remedies but when you can get to a store get her some Burt's Bees chapstick. It burns depending on the severity but it works if you religiously apply it. I don't use anything else because it never works for me. ETA: They even have it in colors if she likes that too..It helps cover the chapped look. |

"but when you can get to a store get her some Burt's Bees chapstick" plus one, I haven't used the Burt's Bees stuff, but I've heard good things about it. and DO pick up a little tube of neutrogena hand cream. It cures my chapped lips overnight. Tastes icky, but they even suggest it for chapped lips on the tube. And nothing is better on chapped, windburned hands. Kitties |
Her lips are better and the E did seem to ease the pain. I won't be able to get her anywhere until tonight so she'll have to make do with it until then. Poor thing, they've cracked and bled and of course skin is peeling off of them. She's a lifeguard at the pool and I didn't even think of having her put lip balm on. Way to go Mom!

 Lipbalm with sunscreen baby! Those lifeguards have a harder job than a lot of people think. Keeping their skin from totally drying out is a chore. Your poor daughter--wet and wind. It's the worst for chap. Hey, moms can't think of everything! You stayed up late making home remedies for her. You're a great mom! |
