My co-worker has  an external HD that's got some issues.  I haven't looked at it yet, but here's what I'm told.

When you plug it in, the light on the HD lights up and you can hear windows beep like it's recognized it, but it  never shows up anywhere.  Anyone have any ideas for me to try?  Like I said I haven't seen it yet, so this is second hand info.

Thanks alot in advance all!!

try the disk manager, and see if it shows up there.

If it does, yo may have to manually assign a drive letter

Perfect timing on this thread.  I just bought a new external HD on Sunday and the damn thing lit up but never was recognized by my puter.  I am stupid about these things and will try the disk manager thingy.

Have you tried:

Shutting off the computer, plugging in the HD, then restarting the computer and let Windoze find the HD on it's own?

I have an older external HD works that way sometimes.

Ok, I know probably more then the avg person about computers, but am far from an expert....I know enough to probably get myself in trouble.  So maybe this will be a stupid question.

I brought the drive home with me from work this morn.  When I got home I plugged it up to see what it did.  My computer found it and the drive showed up under my computer just fine.  When I clicked on it though it says there's nothing on it.  Totally empty.  The owner of the drive said she had like probably 600 pics on it.  Can info/pics just disappear from a drive?  I've never had any HD probs before so that's new to me I guess.
