A loud explosion could be heard around midnight last night in our neighborhood of Georgetown KY.  30+ calls to 911.  Police cars cruised the area for an hour. No explanation.  The explosion was loud enough to wake people up from their sleep.  Neighbors were out walking the streets trying to get information.  Nothing.

Once when I was visiting Manchester, New Hampshire I was
awakened to the sound of fireworks at 3AM.  Someone had
set off a bunch of fireworks mortars in a nearby park for some reason.
Most of the sheeple thought the thuds were gunshots,
and started calling 911.  I walked over and there were a bunch
of PD cars with officers standing around laughing, watching
the event until the fuses burned out.

dupe.  Just kidding - I hate the word.  But I did post real time last night as my scanner going nuts with the 911 dispatchers sending every agency out trying to figure out what was going on.

I live about a mile from where all the calls were coming from and didn't hear any explosion.

I live off the bypass in the Richfield area.   What I heard was not fireworks.  We hear the fireworks from the high school ball games as well as the Bengals training camp so are mostly immune to fireworks.   This was much louder.  People were walking in the streets trying to find out what was going on.

probably a transformer on a utility pole, I have seen them go and they sound like a grenade.

It was Ohio State blowing up !! it just took that long for the sound to get to KY

I've seen those transformers blow up during ice storms.  The "fireworks" show from the explosion is amazing.  Wouldn't the utility companies know if that's what it was?

Calls were coming in from both sides of the Elkhorn creek.  North of the creek is where the "muzzleloader" call came from and south of the creek is where the transformer and flash call came from.  They reported that all the houses in the area still had power so it wasn't a transformer.  Plus transformers burn for hours due to the oil in them and it would have been easily spotted.  The last thing I heard them talk about on the scanner was a commercial building that they were thinking the explosion came from.

I'm on South Broadway and can hear the fireworks and can really hear that cannon they use at the games.  The first night I heard that cannon going off it freaked me out because I didn't know anything about it.  I just heard huge explosion after explosion.

I called a friend of mine who is close friends with a Scott County deputy.  He is going to ask him about it.  I'll let you know if I hear anything.

My first thought this morning was "meth lab" gone bad.  I've never even seen meth so I'm not sure where that thought came from..too much 24 hours news tv I suppose. I'm sure there is a logical explanation.  Doesn't make hearing a large explosion at midnight any less unnerving.

Another loud explosion late last night. Not nearly as loud as the previous one but still louder than fireworks.

The county deputy that I know said he never heard anything about the first explosion.  So whatever it is they must not be taking it as a serious threat.

So who gives a crap, are you going to run for the hills if you hear it again?

I freaking love loud noises like tannerite and low flying aircraft, shit that really  rattles the windows.

Maybe you should go rent War of the Worlds, it may be the lightning without the thunder.

Oh BTW doesnt Georgetown KY have a Toyota Plant.
You are just hearing the Hail abatement Cannons firing to prevent the formation of ice/hail above the plant.

The HAIL SHIELD generator, provides a shock wave that is projected toward the hail baring cloud with a 4000 lb. thrust. The waves are successive, a shot is fired every 5 1/4 seconds, and creates a new 'shock wave' each time. These waves grow in diameter, and spread out to cover one kilometer in diameter immediately above the generator. As the generator heats up, it allows the shock wave, 'torre', to pick up positive ions, and carry them up into the cloud. These positive ions help destabilize the hail formation. The cloud becomes homogenized, and can no longer produce hail while in the shock zone. The shock wave can be seen in the early morning, or in late afternoon. It looks like a heat mirage, that we see on hot surfaces. The shock wave also has a very definite sound. After a cannon shot, or bang, you will hear a very high-pitched whistling type sound, leaving the mouth of the generator. This is the shock wave. The shock wave has been detected as high as 50,000 feet.
and

The generator works exactly like a shot gun. When it is fired, it gives a two ton thrust at the area of most resistance, the butt. The two tons of thrust can not pass through the butt, so the thrust reverses, and goes out through the barrel. This is the 'BOOM' that we hear. When the explosive force goes upward, it creates a vacuum, that opens the two check valves that are built into the butt. These check valves open and draw air into the generator. This air follows the explosive thrust at super sonic speeds. When directed by the barrel, this air becomes the 'Shock Wave', that you can see and hear a few seconds after the initial 'BOOM'. This is repeated every five and quarter seconds.

Run Sheeple Run,

Wow, someone is being an ass.  Loud noises are cool at times but not at midnight in a quiet town when no one is expecting it.  You are actually criticizing people for informing the authorities when they hear a huge unexpected exposion?  What are they supposed to do, say "wow sucks to be whatever/whoever just blew up, hope I'm not next" and then just sit there waiting for whatever to happen?

Yea,  probably a tranformer. I've heard a couple blow before and they can be very loud.

But you also have that rock quarry in Georgetown.  I'm sure they have an explosives shed.  Maybe.

Generally explosions other than .MIL are localized and dont rapidly spread.
So yeah, if your home is still there and the neighborhood isnt on fire, then go back to sleep.

By definition  If you've heard it chances are its already over:

ex·plo·sion   (ĭk-splō'zhən)  Pronunciation Key
n.

A release of mechanical, chemical, or nuclear energy in a sudden and often violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases.
A violent bursting as a result of internal pressure.
The loud, sharp sound made as a result of either of these actions.

So yes Exactly that. Its over,  you Survived, Go back to bed. Not Being an Ass, but just realistic.
