Last night at 2:30 AM my dogs go bonkers. Then 5 seconds later, as my feet are hitting the floor, my doorbell rings.
I peer out to see an Atlanta Police officer in uniform on my front door step. I safe the alarm, open the door, and kindly greet him. He informs me that they had had a 911 hang up linked to my address, asks if all is well. I thanked him and assured him that we were all safe. He then went on his merry way. 1. I appreciate the wellness check. 2. Nice cop...nice attitude. 3. No 911 call was made from my home phone. We never use it and had been in bed for over 3 hours. 4. We have Uverse, so there is no dial tone outside the house, eliminating the pranking element. How could this happen? Ideas? |

911 was does wacky shit sometimes. We would occasionally get a 911 hang up from an abandoned house downtown with no power to it. There wasn't actually a call made from there, but the system produced that address for whatever reason. ETA I suppose no power to the house has nothing to do with the phone system which runs on battery power, but the point was the place was abandoned with no activity etc. |

VoIP can be kinda funky. Friend of mine had a voip number for work at one time, and it was registered with e-911. When he gave up the number/phone, it went over to someone in India. And, they had a phone number that started with "911", so the local PC kept getting accidental (or whatever) 911 calls from "his" voip phone. Took them a little bit to figger it out. |

Spoof Recipient's Caller ID
http://www.spooftel.com/freecall/ I have been spoofed by my co-worker. The call id was my phone number to my phone number.

Something similar has happened to us in the past. They said they receive a hang-up from a cell phone located at or near my address.
I was dead asleep when the doorbell rang and answered the door with gun in hand. Saw who it was and told them to hang on a sec, and secured my weapon. They apologized for the wake-up and went on their way. |

An officer can get the number the call came from on the dispatch screen. He can then search old reports using that number (if that number has been given to the police as a contact number). Once it is found, the officer can look at all addresses they have listed for the individual in any of their reports. |

That one Grister story in the creepy thread was fucked up, amirite? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I like the creepy story thread about the EMT guy that responds to an old man's house because the old man keeps calling the cops and saying someone is in his house that isn't supposed to be. They think the old guy just has some dementia going on, so the EMT guy goes on the call to help check him out. And then the EMT guy sees "someone" in the house too. Creepy shit. |

It is my understanding that disconnected lines can 'false' this way, it's a telco problem. This! Some years ago had a young trooper show up at 0200, POUNDING on door with flashlight in left hand, right hand on grip of his sidearm! Barged right in said there was a 911 hangup from this address. Told him we were all asleep, and he wanted me to wake and bring everyone down. Told him no, and by then wife was downstairs, and she told him kids were all sleeping and all was well. He was insistent SOMEONE called 911, and reluctantly left. About a week later, old guy from Sheriff's Dept rolls up, bangs on door and asks if he can come in for a second. (I have an AR apart on kitchen table Says there was a 911 call from our addy. Checks number and it was from an old FAX machine we used for business that had been disconnected YEARS earlier! |
