This story makes me cringe:

A Petition to Protect the Animal Victims of Hurricane Katrina
We, the citizens of the world, hereby urge you, Mayor C Ray Nagin, to amend your Emergency Order to include the pets of the evacuees.

Like a majority of the folks trapped in New Orleans, many of these animal owners are poor, and/or are people of color, and don't have many rescources. And as you may have read, animals were at first not allowed on evacuation buses, and were actually torn out of people’s arms as they approached the buses.

I was horrified to read of people forced to abandon their pets while being rescued or evacuated, and am now worried that people who are in New Orleans with their animals may now be forced to abandon them.

What you can do:

Sign the petition: The petition at the end of this email asks the mayor to amend the evacuation order to include pets as well as humans.

Call or email your congressional representative: Call and email their congressional representatives and urge them to put pressure on FEMA and Homeland Security to help rescue animals, and for FEMA to tell rescuers to allow evacuees to take their pets. A sample letter is at the end of this email.
