Same here... My dad was a SHP in the 60's-70's. I remember going to the barracks with my mom to get his check one day, it was probably around 71 or so. They brought in a dirty hippy, all smelly and bare foot . I remember them marching him in and taking him down to the holding cells. The cells were at the bottom of a long flight of stairs. So I hear this guy screaming as he falls down the stairs. I'm looking around like wtf and the cop behind the desk goes "they always miss that first step"...

It wasn't until later that I realized the significance of the event...

the first is self-explanatory. the second, that was the song the army band was playing when my dad got on the bus that took him to the troop ship that sailed him off to Vietnam. All he listened to on the radio was the oldies station. when that song played, you could see in his eyes that he was 19 again and stepping onto that bus...

Rest in Peace, Dad...

I meet a nam vet today selling a rifle to his son . He asked me if I had old Ar 15s said I had 2sp1s a74 and a 76 . before I went to basic I got the 74 the 76 a few years ago .
I always feel privileged to have my turn to take care of some items ! Think I'm gonna let him have his turn with the 76

Started this thread thinking about his times and music maybe it can go to his grandsons

Great song, cool video.

ETA: Showed that to one of my uncles a couple years ago and we're both 87% sure he's one of the dudes in the back of one of the Hueys in the video, it's impossible to be 100% certain because it's just a quick profile shot, but if it isn't him he had a doppelganger. He spent a lot of time riding around Vietnam in the back of Hueys.
