I figure it's a lifter, a valve out of adjustment or a rod. My engine ticks at idle and when lightly loaded. It just started a couple days ago. Jeep Wrangler with the 3.8L V6.

I'd like to keep the guessing to a minimum and I figure the type of loading when I rev it should give a clue. The engine is good and warm in this video and it's got plenty of oil. Anybody have a fairly confident opinion as to the source of the ticking?

Here's a video of the tach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nRBI6GUhTE

Hard to tell from the sound in the vid, exhaust leak maybe?

Sounds like an exhaust leak, but it's definitely coming from the engine. The iPhone I recorded it with doesn't help; it's a much more mechanical tick than it sounds like in the video. Ticks at idle and with light accelerator application. Ticking goes away when the engine is dropping RPM.

had a chevy 350 that would do that when the headers would lose seal. exhaust leak

Put the phone in the engine bay to help me out a little more, but that sounds like an exhaust leak.

Add some Marvels Mystery Oil to your oil.  If its a lifter it will pump it back up, seriously.

I've also used Rislone with good results for a noisy/sticky lifter.

I'll give this a shot.

If it weren't for drive by wire, I'd have filmed it from under the hood.

Need better sound quality for sure, but it does sound like an exhaust leak. Fact that it only seems to happen when revving up is also fairly telling. Does it make the sound when gradually bringing the RPM up? Lifter ticks and noisy valvetrane tend to be constant and audible at idle.

Yes, all true. Also, and I'm embarrassed to admit it, I let it get low on oil right before this started.

My challenger ticks in the cold when first start up, But goes away after a few minutes. From what I understand , that's normal.

May not be your case, obviously it's not winter.

I just want to hear it at idle, from the engine bay.

And for the love of all that is holy, please don't add Marvels to your engine oil.

Cracked exhaust manifold resulting in exhaust leak.  I would bet my next paycheck on it.

My Ford F 150 I bought a whikle back as a farm hunting truck had a tick/miss in the engine.

I had it tuned up, new plugs, and new plug wires and it went away.

Rod slapping until the oil pressure builds up.

You'll be able to see it once it ventilates the engine block.

Sorry OP.

I wouldn't put that in an engine, either.

When my boys were young, though, 50/50 Mobil 1 and MMO made a hell of a bicycle chain lube.

Phantom "ticks" are pretty common in newer engines. I can hear them in just about every new truck, no matter what the make.

While it sounds like an exhaust leak, that sound along with the details you provided (ran it low on oil), I'm guessing rod knock.  Go buy one of those cheap mechanics stethoscopes at the parts store.  If the noise is coming from the crankcase, you've got problems.

I'm going with exhaust leak but if it is valve tick often using a different oil will quiet it. Had a friend go from m1 to rotella and his valve tick disappeared.

What's wrong with MMO?  Serious question.

I used this stuff back in the day on my crown vic that was ticking and it worked like a charm.

Was I a moron for doing this??

nope. Its been used for years.  People who have never heard of it or never used so they assume it doesnt work.  Replace for a quart of oil or add when youre low.

I'm thinking exhaust too. A mechanic showed me a test for possible manifold/header/pipe leaks. Take a dollar bill and hold it loose over the end of the tail pipe. Have someone press the gas pedal and release a few times and watch the dollar bill flap. If it sucks back into the exhaust tip at release, there may be an exhaust leak.

If you can't find a leak, maybe something loose inside the pipes? Missing hanger? Broken baffle? Chunk of catalyst rolling around?

Sounds like an exhaust leak.  Mabey at the manifold or doughnut gasket.

Not a rod.  I think lifter, lash adjustment, pushrod, or cam lobe related.  Small possibility its a main bearing.
