How reliable are the vortec 4.8L engines?  I traded my dodge ram quad cab 4x4 with a 4.7 in on a 2008 Tahoe 2wd with a 4.8L.  The only two options for engines is the 5.3 and 4.8, I couldn't find a tahoe with the options I wanted that had a 5.3L. So I took home a 4.8L tahoe instead, its got the towing package and 3.73 axle ratio.  I don't know a whole lot about this motor.  Can anyone help me out?

If maintained, it is a 300k plus mile motor.

ETA: If you are towing, expect to replace a pinion bearing around 100k.

Good.  As a matter of fact, most domestic V-8's are very reliable.

We had a company truck with one that went 150 K without any issues and it was used for some towing but not a lot.  Mostly highway and then local driving over about three years.

We traded it so I don't know how its doing now.

Ive got a Ram with the 4.7 and my smith has a Chev with the 4.8....both  FS 4x4s

I really didnt notice much of a difference and both seemed to be lacking in the torque dept (naturally) We are both used to larger V-8s. I miss my 5.9

So far......no probs with either, but he just got his new , last fall and I bought mine used 2 yrs ago.(70k on her now)

I got rid of m Dodge..It was an 06 and I had went through the whole lemon law crap because they couldn't fix a vibration in the drivetrain, although the state of Georgia decided that it wasn't enough to label it a lemon.  It also started leaking water through the rear glass and my rear door windows.  I loved the look of the truck, but hated the damn problems

And also we just had a baby in January and even though its a quad cab, there isn't enough room in the back seat.

I've got one here at the shop with 450k on it. It is finally on it's last leg and has very little oil pressure (like 5 psi) at idle but still runs great. I see them everyday with 100-200k on them and the engines are still in great shape as long as they are taken care of.

DAYUM,
Sorry for crapping earlier, I hate to hear you had issues with yours. So far mine is holding up. Wasn't the 06' the last year before a big Change at Dymler? that or yours was built on a Monday. Good luck with the Chevy

ETA: My lil tot loves ours, We also have an Xterra. It is easier to her in and out of the truck than the SUV.

Are all Chevy bellhousings the same?  Say I wanted to drop-in a 4.3 where a 283, 305, 2.8 or 151 was before?

No problem, Hell I had an 05 rumble bee ram before the 06 ram.  I needed an suv and the durango is ass ugly in my opinion.  From what I hear, the 06 4x4 rams with 20" wheels are having lots of issues with vibration.  I bought the truck new in 06, and when I traded it in yesterday it had 6700 miles, YEP JUST 6700.  It would vibrate so bad on the highway that the steering wheel would jerk out of your hand and the passenger seats would shake.
