At what altitude do they spec? I have never seen anything over 1000ft/sec considered subsonic. Have I got this wrong?

It's metric

They are subsonic here in Virginia.....not exactly match ammo though....and that's out of a cz 455 precision trainer.

......

In fact, I am going to go shoot some now

1040 ft/second is generally considered to be standard velocity......

The speed of sound is solely a function of air temperature.  Decreased air pressure at higher altitudes has no affect on the speed of sound.

Vs = SQRT(1.4*53.34*(T+460)*32.2)
Vs = speed of sound in fps,
where T is in ºF.

This chart notes the speed of sound as a function of atmospheric temperature, as well as some velocity vs barrel length relationships for some common ammo.

This,
I think barrel length spec is probably a bigger factor than altitude.
10/22 with 16" tac sol barrel and suppressed, standard velocity stuff is silent, bolt clank is the only noise the gun makes.
The high velocity stuff through the same gun doesn't make much of a pop but rips through the air pretty good and is kinda loud.
Same suppressor on a buckmark with a 5" barrel is completely silent (slide clank) no matter what velocity ammo I feed it.

Longer barrel = faster bullet, to a point

I thought under 1100 was generally subsonic? Standard Velocity CCI is almost always subsonic from 18" 10/22 around here. Not sure on the muzzle velocity. I think they market it around 1050.

1,126 ft/s is the speed of sound. So ya.

If you want subsonic. The Aquila 22 SSS 60 grains is good stuff. Although I can never find it for a decent price anymore.

Anyone know where to find Aquila 22 SSS 60 grain for a decent price?

OK, thank you. So as long as I am shooting in sub freezing temperatures, it may be subsonic. This seems pretty dumb to market ammo that wont be subsonic for 99% of people as such. I have some CCI, I think, that is marked subsonic and its in the 750 ft/sec range. This is what I was expecting, it wasnt until I got home and could read the damn fine print did I see the velocity. I bought 2 boxes and the second isnt marked as the first. Hmmm...... I plan to shoot it out of my Pre-17 K22 revolver for in town varmint eradication.

Just as an aside, there is no finer .22 LR ammo than Eley.

I think you are reading the charts wrong, as long as the temp is above -10f 1040fps will be subsonic.

It's probably made to whatever specs Wolf ordered. That's just my guess anyway.

Nope.  It is the same ammo as Lapua.

I spoke with one of their reps at SHOT and he told me, "They are the exact same ammo.  We load it into Lapua boxes and then we load it into Wolf boxes.  It is the same ammo."

I still have about 6 boxes of the old Subsonic hollow Extra.   Love that stuff.   Kills critters dead out of my Winchester 69A.

CCI standard velocity is 1070fps. Definitely subsonic even out of a 16" rifle.
