The device needs a 4.7k 1/2 watt resistor. I gave out a 4.7k 1/2 watt resistor. It didn't work and I got this picture back. Top one is the one that needs to be replaced. What's with the mystery band?  Why won't the bottom one work in place of the top one?

The resistor is not the problem. Resistors rarely give up the ghost. Cold solder joint elsewhere, or a capacitor, or semi conductor is the culprit.

What did the resistor measure on your multimeter?

Leads eaten off by phosphine gas exposure. Leads need to be longer for it to work

Both measure 4.7k. Top one satisfies circuit, bottom one does not

Are they both the same tolerance % ?

Is bottom REALLY a 1/2 watter?

top looks to be 47k, not 4.7k...

The calc says it's 47.2k

They're not the same at all. Different band systems. One is based on a 4 band system and the other is based on the 5 band system. One is 4700 ohms and the other is 47200 ohms. Big difference!

If that top one is Yellow Violet Orange Red Gold

I promise you they both read 4.7k... And the top one came from a circuit that requires 4.7k to satisfy the device

Also the top one is yellow violet red red gold

The top resistor looks to have the 4-band color code as was mentioned.  The bands put it 47K.

Now, if indeed they both measured the same before and after failing, then something else is hinky in the circuitry.  High voltage drop causing a breakdown or high current causing excess power dissipation, etc.

As to why the new resistor will not work?  Something else is now amiss and you or your customer really needed the 47K device to start with.
