| Got an electrical inspection for our remodel and the inspector said that the kitchen counter outlets need to be GFI. I get that but my contractor wants to install and rewire a dedicated circuit. In my reading I cant find anywhere that says a new circuit needs to be wired. Only that the outlet closest to the box needs to be GFI or I could upgrade all of them. What should we be doing? Thanks |

What else is connected to the kitchen counter circuit? Also, what else is down stream of the kitchen counter circuit. If it's run weird, like lights that would go out if the GFCI trips or any appliance that could cause nuisance trips, then the electrician is spot on regardless of what local code may allow.

I think code requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit for kitchen counter. 210.something requires (2) small appliance branch circuits to serve the countertop receptacles in a newly built home... ...OP, you can either install a GFCI recept at each individual location that requires protection or install one at a single location and load-side protect all of the remaining receptacles downstream of it. It depends on how the circuit was wired and/or your preference. |

If you did a kitchen remodel, two dedicated circuits for the various outlets should have been installed. An outlet for every 2 linear feet of counter space that are GFCI protected.
To solve your issue, if the inspector does not require the dedicated, just buy a few GFCI outlets. During the remodel did you see how the wires where run? Do you know what is on the kitchen circuits. Don't want a counter GFCI to trip, and spoil fridge contents, turn lights off at night, etc. |
