I'm going to catch a lot of flak for this, but I feel the need to state the obvious.  Our effort in Iraq has had its ups and downs.  I feel confident that we will control the situation and eventually turn the government over to the Iraqis. After that, we need to examine our reasons for sending troops anywhere for any reason.  We're in Iraq because we have to be there. Sooner or later, the Muslims are going to take over the government.  That will lead to more problems in the region.  Once again, we'll be called upon to wipe the world's ass. We need to change the way we do business.  We are not going to win any hearts and minds no matter how many guys we lose, how many public utilities we restore, how many schools we build or soccer teams we fund.  I'm thinking of Heinlein's book "Starship Troopers".  If we have to go in to put someone back in line, we come in and kick the living daylights out of everybody and break their shit. Screw the public relations and world opinion. We wouldn't be on the world's Christmas list, but they hate us already so what would we lose.  It's either that or don't go in at all.  Let someone else do it.  Just because we have the world's most powerful military force doesn't mean we have to police the planet.  The U.N. should know that if we are called in, we will bring hell with us. Maybe then we can bring some of our people home.
