So I had a Stihl chainsaw on ebay that sold 2 nights ago. I contacted the buyer directly after the auction congratulating them and I requested they confirm their address so I can get the item mailed out. A day goes by and I still had not heard from them so I sent them another message. Late yesterday I get a message from them stating they didnt buy the item. Thinking I may have messaged the wrong person I looked, and they are clearly the winner. So I message them back and say yes you are showing as the highest bidder and winner of the auction. I even added a screen shot showing their name under winning bid. They message me back saying they have no need for a chain saw and would never bid on one. I messaged them again with the full address of the person who was listed as the buyer and I have not heard back from them.

So now I am confused. Is this buyers remorse? Hacked account? They have 200+ feedback so its not like they are new. I contacted ebay and reported the buyer but who knows what will happen. Do I have to eat the fees and relist? Has anyone had this happen to them?

Could be fraud or a hacked account.

I'd move in and relist it.

Send a cancel request to them through eBay and relist the saw.

ETA: this way fees will be returned to you.

I think I read recently that some EBay or Paypal accounts were getting hacked. Either that or buyers remorse. Either way file a non-paying bidder claim as stated above.

What size Stihl, I'm looking for something smaller than my 362, if it's a ms170, I'd be interested.

Do not send a cancel request or do a seller cancel

Your best way to go is open a non paying bidder case . If they don't pay after a few days you can close it and get your fees back and no hit to your account

You have other options listed below however do not do them !!!!!! eBay does a piss poor job informing you of the consequences of these options

You can do a instant cancel on the seller end you'll get your fees back but you get a defect against your sellers account. If defects get above about 2% they will shut you down

You can also send a cancel request to the buyer but if they do not agree and still do not pay you ,  you will lose your fees

You can get the ball rolling on any of these by clicking "resolve a problem" on the auction page

ebay has turned into craigslist, everybody wants something for nothing
I used to sell there and quit due to all the fake bidders, people changing their minds and not paying, demanding moeny back without send back products.

I still buy once in a while but haven't sold anything in 4-5 years.

Report them as a non-paying bidder. When the issue is resolved, re-list it.

This, it is the best way.  No consequences to your seller account and it is really the last way to report a deadbeat buyer.  A buyer can only get 2 non-paying bidder strikes against their account before eBay suspends their account.
