When asked to for the biggest improvement in the new camera, Westfall stresses that every aspect of the camera has been re-assessed but finally concludes: 'If you had to highlight just one thing, I'd say the sensor. It's a new level for us in terms of image quality.'

'There's a couple of things that we consider when we think about IQ: number one on this sensor is noise. It's clear the noise level is better than in the 1D Mk IV or the 1DS III. The pixel size is larger than in the 1DS III or 5D Mark II (6.95 microns, versus 6.4) and the difference is even more striking compared to the 5.7 micron pixels in the 1D Mark IV. That helps us in terms of light capturing ability and increases the signal to noise ratio. In turn, that does nothing but help the dynamic range of the camera.'

Could this be the one to rule them all?  Other than the price tag.

Damn, 14 fps.

That's JPEG only though. Still looks like a great camera that I'll never be able to afford.

It'll do 12fps in RAW, nothing to balk at there.  Have to start shaving my monies for March...

Damn that is fast for a full frame camera. I want

I looked at the review, but didn't look at the price.  How much?

IIRC from another site, it was estimated MSRP of $6800.

Too rich for my blood.  I would love to have a full frame camera.  Maybe the 5D MK II's will come down a bit.

Many or most of the pro sports shooters out there shoot in jpeg only during games so that they don't hit the buffer max anyway.  And sports shooters are the ones who will most utilize that 14fps, so I'd say jpeg only in that mode is hardly a hindrance.

14 fps is overkill for sports shooters IMHO.  Unless you are trying to catch the ball compressed against the bat or something similar all it is going to do is increase the workflow time.  Now, the focusing capabilities are a whole other deal, and that would be awesome for sports.

I have to admit that I'm disappointed.  My original 1DS is in need of replacement, and I have been hoping that the newest generation would be a significant improvement in resolution, ideally high enough so I could essentially mothball the large format.  Now I'm going to have to look at medium format digital backs which are more expensive, or stick to LF when large prints are needed.  Certainly for the sports photography I do, the speed of this new camera would be a waste.

How big are you printing? 18MP is plenty to print very sharp, clear photos well over 16x24 or 24x30. And if you really need more MP you can always shoot several photos and do a photo merge.

Mostly 20x24 with an occasional 24x30, but I'm a resolution snob.  Once I started shooting LF many years ago, I didn't even like taking MF beyond 11x14.  I'm using an old 11MP Canon Ds1 now for digital, and was hoping the newest version would be in the mid-20sMP.  I have never given merge a chance, which I need to, particularity for panoramic images .

I can't wait to shoot astro timelapse with this camera. Should be able to get Hubble like images from certain places.

Yeah, give photo merge a try, it'll generate nice fat 50-60+ MP images for you. Here are some I did in 2010 with my 5DII in Southern Utah/Northern AZ - Panoramas

I shot those at 17mm portrait orientation, and then photo merged in Photoshop CS5 - Final results are around 50-60MP. The 1Dx sensor will be an improvement over the 5DII sensor, which was already phenomenal. IQ out of the 1Dx will be amazing.

I would love to have 14fps.

What most sports shooters are complaining about is the price, they would prefer that some combination of the MP, video and full size sensor be dropped in order to reduce the price.  In other words, if they could get something with the MP size of a 1d Mk II, with the auto focus and ISO ability of the 1D X, and get it for 3-3.5K, it would sell incredibly well.

The "oh its expensive, but newspapers will buy a boatload to throw in an equipment pool" days are over.  There are so many fewer staff photographers  today, even compared to when the Mk IV came out, the newspapers don't want to buy any equipment anyway, and only a select groups of independent guys are going to be able to swing 12k for a pair of bodies in this economy.
