I want dual monitors for my computer. I have the monitor. I can buy the cable. Is it plug and play, or is there software needed?

Edit: this is at work. I previously had duals, new area doesn't have dual and worthless managers won't tell IT to install for me, so I'm gonna do it myself.  Monitors are identical to each other.

Plug and play.

Even a caveman could do it.

No triple monitors no care.  You'll love the extra screen space if you have been on one monitor this entire time.

A single 4K monitor is acceptable as well.

I'm running 3 monitors, no special software needed.

Wait, you don't run dual 4K monitors?

Link Posted: 4/18/2017 9:46:24 AM EDT
It should be fairly simple, you might have to install the correct drivers for your video card if you have not already. If you have issues, depending on where you live, I would be willing to help. Although, I will say it should be plug and play.
Link Posted: 4/18/2017 9:47:07 AM EDT
Make sure your video card has acceptable outputs. The software and drivers your graphics card utilizes is all you will need.

If you don't have a graphics card you may be unable to do this (heck, maybe even onboard graphics support it nowadays, I don't know)

They are decent. I've had them for years after I got them for 1/2 off. I would replace them with something better but I don't really use my computer speakers for audio too much.

Most things I run through my towers just off to the left with the TV.
Link Posted: 4/18/2017 9:50:38 AM EDT
Windows 8.1 blows at it, especially if you use a TV for a second monitor. It can't handle the scaling, when they did the .1 update they even added an option to have separate scaling but it doesn't actually function.

Curved widescreen here too.  My wife happily took over my triple 27" 1080 monitor setup.

Too many monitors will actually cause a loss in efficiency in workflow, as screen management is now an issue.

I have five monitors and a view of a knowledge wall at work.  Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I rock 3 now.  If I had the space on my desk, I'd figure out how to run a 4th.

Depends.  If your computer has multiple video outputs already, you're probably good to go.  If it doesn't, you're probably screwed and will have to convince IT to either give you a new graphics card or a usb monitor adapter, which sucks (but that's the way NMCI was doing it years ago when I had to fuck with them).

Dedicated pro tool sets is where multiple monitors shine. For general use though, six is a tad overkill.

Only one word of caution, likely not necessary:
Check your?video card for maximum acceptable screen resolution and make certain you won't be overdriving it.
I fried an expensive Nvidia Quaddro card overdriving it.

I used to run triple 24" monitors but I just replaced them.  I'm running a center 30" in horizontal and two 20" monitors in vertical on each side.

If you have a video card to support multiple monitors, then it is plug and play. If not, you'll need to go out and get a video card that supports multiple monitor set-ups. Nvidia,  EVGA, VisionTek, etc.

Just to be pedantic, based on his comments, it IS always true.  If it doesn't cause a loss in efficiency, then there aren't too many monitors.

So I'm up and running.

only issue I have is "pop up" windows or menus.

Left is screen 1, right is 2.
I have 2 set as Main Display.

When I have something on display 1 and it generates a popup window or menu, that appears on display 2.
Popups from display 2 show on display 2 as normal.

any way to make display 1 popup show on display 1 ?

Windows tend to remember where they were last closed and reopen from the same spot.

I say window, though it's not a screen using Windows. It's a production program we use at work. I'll try restart and see what happens.

Thanks for the helps

Move the window to the monitor you want it to open on then minimize and maximize it. It should remember from there.

Try a piece of software called DisplayFusion. Helps with custom tools and adds a toolbar for each monitor. Another option is a "Pin on top" setting - allows you to select a window to hover over any other application.
