I read a Rolling Stone article about absinthe as a teenager. It was very alluring to a kid; only legal in two countries, 140 proof, supposedly(sp?) causes hallucinations, the muse of famous artists and musicians, etc. This is what Van Gogh was drinking when he cut his ear off. DAMN! I wanted some! Fast forward to three weeks ago. While doing light demolition and clean-up at a rental property, I came across the previous tenant's liquor cabinet. I saw a bottle of no-shit absinthe. I knew it was authentic because there was other high priced hooch in the cabinet. So.... My brother and I take it home. The wife is in disbelief that we're gonna drink a bottle of booze we "found". "You're gonna die! Blahblahblah". "I'm insured. Shut up!" The preparation ritual makes you feel dirty. LinkIt's very heroine-esque, you even use a spoon. From what I've read, you should drink two or three glasses quickly to get the full effect. So we had four each . this shit is nice! Tastes like a hybrid of Sambuca and Jagermeister with the kick of a pissed-off mule. Needless to say, we were extremely intoxicated -and quickly. . In the end, I guess you could get grain alcohol that's stronger, but it's not half as sexy. At least now I can check "drink Absinthe" off the list of things I want to do. At $200+s/h I won't be drinking it again anytime soon. Cheers to Van Gogh and the King of Spirits Gold.

Grappa gives me a headache. It seems like every Greek wedding or get together I go to, someone breaks out the Grappa. When I was in Germany I drank a bunch of absinthe. It did have a little hallucinatory effect, but I know I wasn't drinking it right. The alcohol is too strong though. |
The stuff available in USA is absinthe in name only. This was the real dillyo. 70% alc and 100mg of thujone
|
I dont rembember what the name of the Ouzuo I drank was... but it was in Greece, and when you add water to it, it gets milky in color. Next thing I know I had to hold on to the railing walking down the steps....the building turned upside down on me, while trying to exit said establishment

I just got back from England last week. They had bottles of Absinthe for sale in some specialty liquor store, along with Cohibas. I kinda wanted to buy some, and bring them back, but I don't drink or smoke. What exactly would TSA do if they found Cuban cigars or Absinthe in my suitcase? Just take them? Or would I get fined or something? Keep in mind that I'm not 21. |
Take the bands off the cigars..... |

I have brought back cigars and absinthe from europe - nobody gave a damn. Of course - I travel a LOT and I'm not bringing it cases of anything or more than one bottle at a time. As for absinthe - I had some that was bottled in 1969 and it didn't taste good - it did however cause us to have to crawl to our hotel rooms in Germany. Be careful - too much of anything is dangerous! Peace |
they sell it in airport at heathrow. was like 20 pounds sterling a bottle. TSA and customs doest give a shit. cant say about the cubans i smoked mine before getting back to the states. |

The Absinthe sold today has much, much less Thujone than the original - which caused it to be banned. IIRC Pernod, while containing also Anis ( which is in Ouzou ), had Thujone, too ( and was banned, too ). Ouzou is Greek, so I wonder why it´s served on Italian weddings ... ?!? Grappa is Italian, its a spirit made out of spent grains. I don´t like it, but some people take it religiously. But it contains neither Anis, nor Thujone. Some guys are mixing a lot of things up in this thread! BTW there is an Ouzou, IIRC form Samos ( or Lesbos? ) which contains Mastix, which is reportedly good for everything, including your Sex life ;-) I tried Absinth, the variety sold today, and it´s strong for sure ( I mean alcohol content )! And EVERY ingredient may cause "effects" adding to the alcohol effects, including hop oils and polyphenols from ripe, strong, red grapes, such as in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and San Giovese ... ;-) H |
Real Absinthe with the thujone is now available in the US. I have three bottles of it at home - one without and the other two with the thujone. -K |
I thought grappa was made from the grapeskins left over from winemaking |
I thought grappa was made from the grapeskins left over from winemaking Exactly, called by me "spent grains" ( in german: "Treber" ). H |
