So several threads here have comments about LEO's(usually ATF) kickign down doors and shooting dogs. Is this just a veiled jab at the ATF or is shooting dogs a real tactic/ practice?

When they are vicious and can't be contained or controlled, yep.
Most dogs are not aggressive and a good boot solves the problem.

we did it in the gulf war. worried about diseases, etc. I say it was just something to do.

I make it a habit, if I have time, that before I walk into any yard I toss a rock or pine cone through the grass. Good way to find dogs before they get into biting range.
